"De'Angelo Russell does not fit there whatsoever. They just did not want to see Kevin Durant walk out the door with no compensation. ... They will trade him. It's just a matter of when." - @TheSteinLine on @dpshow
This is the stunner for me and the reason we were not able to sign and trade Kyrie and in the end why we can't sign (and trade) Horford. It makes no sense to me that GSW would want Russell. I guess he is an asset that they can trade at some point allowing them to get something for Durant. Boy, I did not see this coming.
How long before they can trade him? Why would he go along with this? He must be getting big money for it. Is he going to have any control over where he is traded? He could get traded to Sacramento for example or maybe the Knicks. What if he gets injured? Are they not even going to play him to protect him? Perhaps this is all worked out behind the scenes and that is why he was willing to do this.
Someone may correct me but did we have to renounce Horford in order to absorb Walker's salary in the sign and trade? I think that is the case but I am not 100% sure. I think also contributing to this is that Horford may have said he wasn't going to do a sign and trade, he was just going to sign with Philly. If that was the case, then there was no reason to give the Nets anything to do a sign and trade and avoid renouncing Horford (and others).
This is disappointing I had convinced myself that we were going to be able to sign or more likely sign and trade Horford. Then GSW swooped in. Like I said, I did not see that coming.
