Highlights of a couple of games vs. Bucks, where he blocks Greek Freak's shots several times.

I much prefer Vonleh to Noel. Much better offensive player, play making big, and can shoot 3's confidently. Noel is awful on offense.  On defense they are a wash.

Hmmm, I wouldn't mind a flyer on Vonleh either, but the defensive numbers don't look like a wash to me. Noel is among the league leaders in steal and block rates, as well a defensive +/- consistently every year of his career so far. It's true that he can't shoot a lick, but he's at least good around the rim.

Based on that, I'd give a clear defensive edge to Noel. Offensively, they are both bad. Noel is good around the rim and useless everywhere else. Vonleh is just mediocre everywhere - a "better" shooter with below average percentages from everywhere.

Yeah, I just don't see what Noel brings to the table that we won't be getting from Robert Williams.  Vonleh can play two positions where we lack depth.

The position versatility does check a box, that's true. Doesn't the same argument apply to Grant Williams vs Vonleh, though? What does Vonleh bring at PF that's definitely better than Grant?

I’d take a flyer on Noel. He’s had quite the fall from #1 pick candidate to today, but the ability is still there if someone can keep him healthy and hustling.

Get someone to convince him that a 2 year “show me” contract could make him very rich and a hometown hero again.

POS human. Hard pass don't care if he was Shaq talented.

ok fine

There's been some drama, work ethic, drug suspension -- obviously not good things, but are we sure it's that bad, even on a small deal? I'm just presuming it's a risk/reward thing and he'd command more if he already had his act together.

There are going to be plenty of big man minutes to go around losing Horford, Baynes, and possibly Theis and Morris with limited resources to get new bigs.   Even if Williams breaks out we’ll need other guys to fill in minutes too, but Williams is only 21 so you can’t count on it.   Noel is temping being 3rd in blocks and 1st in steals per 36 minutes last year.

Thought it was time to revive this idea before he gets signed by another team

Vonleh is still available. Could we sign for the League minimum? He is young (23), long, plays 4/5 swing, improved 3 point shot, can take to ball to the floor, improvement is on an upward curve.  Really fits well in Brad Stevens offense and defense. Local kid. Works out in the Celtics facility during off-season.

I'm shocked we did not already try to sign him.

I think he's waiting on the Lakers/Clippers Kawhi decision. Otherwise I think he'd get a room exception slot.

One of those teams will have cap space, and their pick of the remaining free agents. If that team likes other people more than Vonleh I could see him coming here for the vet min. After Kawhi signs and the dust settles on the cap space moves after that, I wouldn't be surprised if there is someone who can contribute at the vet min for us.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

Kawhi decision is now holding up other things from happening.  In fact, interesting that Kanter signed with us before knowing where things fall with LAL/LAC/TOR.

Pass.....As a back up Center - horrible. I am STILL from the old school where LENGTH matters and Noah is 6-9. He'll get eaten alive by the Embiids of the world.

Decent height and weight matter especially since we are a Kantar shoulder injury away from having no legit BIG on the roster.

We have tons of PFs on the roster (R Williams and Theis) but NO ONE to anchor the middle.

just curious, but how many "Embiids" are there in the world, let alone the nba? also, who doesn't get eaten up by Embiid? finally, who among the remaining FA are able to resist Embiids ravenous appetite successfully and will sign for the money allotted to the celtics?

thanks.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

Robert Williams is 6'10 with a 7'6 wingspan though. He's definitely big enough to play C, just doesn't have the muscle and experience yet. Vonleh would be a decent backup for small ball lineups, and his physical profile is very similar to Horford's, who btw locked up Embiid for us in the past few seasons.
