Should the Celtics strike out in free agency, a potential back-up plan is to absorb another team’s large, unwanted veteran contract with one season left on their deal in addition to attached future assets, per Brian Robb of Boston Sports Journal. One name that comes to mind is Grizzlies forward Chandler Parsons.

Punting the year and making the grizz worse. Not terrible

Why would  the Grizz give up any assets to dump Parsons?  They're not going to make the playoffs and they aren't a player in free agency.

Agree. In fact they have an incentive to be the worst team in the league so their pick doesn't convey next year. I don't think that they will be trading off 1st round picks as they try to rebuild unless it's for very young players that they like.

Expiring contracts would have to come from a team that wants to sign a big free agent this summer.

The clippers come to mind.

What expiring deals do they have?

Could also be from guys bumping up against the tax line.

Some options are like Portland with Evan Turner, Meyers Leonard. Charlotte if Kemba returns with MKG, Biyombo, Batum. Maybe Hassan Whiteside in Miami (so any bad MIA contracts). Many options in OKC as well.

Contracts that they would want to unload into cap space to sign Jimmy Butler. Expiring Houston has
PJ TUCKER and Eric Gordon...

Edit never mind they’re over cap still.

I wouldn’t mind accumulating assets while taking back bad contracts, so long as they are up next season and we can go for another max FA then.

Not sure what are cap space can get us this summer if Vuc gets a 5yr offer from Orlando.

I wonder if rather than a couple of big contracts, they'd take on a few smaller (Baynes-sized) deals that teams need to move to open up cap space/reduce their tax burden. Similar to taking on Marcus Thornton in exchange for the Cavs pick that turned into IT. Even if teams wouldn't give up an unprotected first, swap rights with the Bucks pick (aka we get the better of their pick or the Bucks pick) would be good (presumably a deal like that would include something like a second rounder or two if the swap didn't occur)
I'm bitter.

We are not going to get a top tier FA realistically.

Therefore, I think getting a good player on a bad contract is worthwhile. Such as Adams.  I don't think we should take guys like Parsons.

I also thought about swapping picks .
Orlando and Charlotte come to mind. Both teams want to resign their star players and both a pushing towards the luxury tax. I think Charlotte needs more cap relief than Orlando do. Ironically we can assume the byombo and Mosgovs contracts into cap space.
Wouldn’t be bad if we end up with the 2 highest 2020 picks between ours, bucks , magic and hornets

Taking on contracts like parsons may come handy when Beal or George or others become available at the trade deadline .. it doesn’t have to be looked at a deal in isolation. If Adams doesn’t fit with what we do why take on him if the draft compensation from okc is underwhelming?

If Danny doesn’t have an agreement with a big free agent or Rozier within the first couple days of free agency I predict he’d wait and sit on the cap space until a team becomes desperate enough to give him good draft compensation for taking on a contract or wait until available cap space dries up and the left out free agents are willing to take team friendly deals - like bucks did with Lopez last summer.
If he’s willing to wait ... it’s in Celtics best interest that Kemba , Vucevic and butler switch teams while Harris stays with the Sixers... this will really eat up a lot of the cap space available to sign players this summer
