With the knowledge that we have now:
  • Kyrie Irving leaving for sure now as he's unhappy
  • Al Horford leaving, because we're not a contender anymore
  • 3 draft picks being used on Langford, Williams and Edwards
In hindsight, should the Celtics have tried to beat the Lakers offer for Davis?

The Lakers gave up:

Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart + #4 pick + '21/'22 pick + pick swap in '23 + '24/'25 pick (= 3 players + 3/4 picks)

The Celtics could have easily beaten that with:

Jayson Tatum, Marcus Smart, Robert Williams + #14 + #20 + '20/'21 Memphis pick + pick swap in '23

Would you have done that with what you know now? Explain why yes or why not.

No.  Lakers could risk it because he's likely to resign.  They gave up a ton (moreso in future assets like draft picks - I'm honestly not too impressed with their young guys).

Not to mention.  From a personal standpoint.  I'm so glad I don't have to pay attention to the whole will he stay or not garbage that would come after every loss.  The national media would push that story every chance they got.

That Lakers offer is still better but regardless, why mortgage the future just to lose Davis in a year?

Short answer, NO!

Nikola is better and has taken his team further than Davis ever had.

No, especially with Irving leaving.

At the point in time that the trade took place, I don't see any way that ownership would have approved of a massive package for Davis. The Celtics aren't afraid of risk, but there's still such a thing as risk management.

yes.

Me too. I'm a big believer in success healing frustrations over roles, playing style, relations or even money.

Since Kyrie didn't tell Danny he would leave for sure beforehand, I believe he could have been retained.
Of course there was a big risk that Davis would leave after one season, but if that season was succesful I certainly think that there was a chance of keeping him.

I'm a little less high on Tatum than others and I would have given him up for that gamble. Plus that Memphis pick. With the new lottery odds and no incentive for the Grizzlies to tank it's far from a guarantee that it will strike gold.

There needed to be chosen a route (and that should have been done earlier), the choice between pushing all-in to contend or build on the youth. And I thought both options were viable, but what this draft has given us and how we seem to squander our assets I now believe that it was a mistake to not go for Davis. I have big doubts that we'll able to build a contender around Brown and Tatum now.

With Irving/Brown/Hayward/Horford/Davis + (Wanamaker(?)/#22/Ojeleye/Morris(?)/Theis/Baynes), the Celtics would have been a legit contender for at least a season.

I'm pretty sure the Pelicans would have rather dealt us Anthony Davis (for even a little lighter package than I mentioned in the OP, but I didn't want to start a ''which package is better, Celtics or Lakers''-discussion).

Yes

Well, the young guys were the problem

Kyrie is part of the solution with AD.

The young guy's ceiling was losing to us in the conference finals (Doubt they get that far without Kyrie in the east now).

With GS out of the picture, Boston easily wins the east. Then beats the lesser west team. This was a simple move, easy decision. It was bigger than Kyrie and AD, but the fact that GS may be out of the picture.

This year was probably a guaranteed title for whomever can land AD with their current superstar. Now, LAL is gonna walk to the finals. Ainge did not only drop the ball, he deflated it, because all the air went out of your team.

No Davis didnt want to play here plus his father didnt want him to play here.  Besides I really like the direction of the team and hoping to get Randle and Bryant and that would put the starters around the same age.

Randle + Bryant would be a fantastic solution, I agree. But if we can't solve the 'puzzle' this summer, I'm not sure we'll get another chance. After Brown (and Tatum) have signed extensions it will be much harder to clear as much cap space as we have now, so our options will diminish.
