Why not

If we traded IT for Kyrie then bring back IT, Its like nothing happened except for that Brooklyn pick we also lost lol

If kyrie is gone at that point we have nothing to lose by bringing IT back as a backup at the minimum

In what role?  3rd string PG?  Emotional leader?

Unfortunately, that's about all you can expect to get out of him these days.

I'll take it

We kind of didn't have any emotional leader last year did we? That's one step in forging the locker room chemistry

Since we traded him he hasn’t shown himself able to play acceptable NBA ball. Pass
'23 Historical Draft: Orlando Magic.

PG: Terry Porter (90-91) / Steve Francis (00-01)
SG: Joe Dumars (92-93) / Jeff Hornacek (91-92) / Jerry Stackhouse (00-01)
SF: Brandon Roy (08-09) / Walter Davis (78-79)
PF: Terry Cummings (84-85) / Paul Millsap (15-16)
C: Chris Webber (00-01) / Ralph Sampson (83-84) / Andrew Bogut (09-10)

For the vet minimum or similar?  Sure.  He's a good character guy.

Not clear he can really play at a high enough level on offense to make up for his defensive issues.

Very sad to say that, but it's the truth.

I think a contender should give him a shot to find his way back to form.  A good team that needs scoring off the bench and can afford to take the defensive hit.  But any team that signs him should be ready for him to not earn minutes.

If (as seems likely) Kyrie walks, I think the team ought to look into trading for Mike Conley if they are trying to be competitive next year.  If the team is refocusing on a youth movement, then it  would make sense to use the MLE on a competent veteran (e.g. Collison, Rubio, Joseph, Beverley).

Maybe Danny Ainge will re-sign Terry to try and recoup value there, expecting that he'll be better and happier as a full time starter without Kyrie around.  I kind of hope Terry is gone, but if the past is any indication, Ainge hates to let assets walk away for nothing.

I wouldn't be so quick to assume his career is over.  He tried to rehab without surgery with the Cavs/Lakers, then realized surgery was needed.  He rehabbed until mid-last season and then got some run with Denver.  He didn't shoot that well, but he hadn't played ball in a year, and was rusty.  Then, they shortened their rotation to prepare for the playoffs.  He may very well be done, but for the vet minimum, I'd be willing to take a bet that he could be a spark plug off the bench for us.

I think you might as well if Kyrie walks and you can get him for cheap, which he absolutely should be. And it should be clear to him that this is a bench role for now, though he’d have the opportunity to earn the starting spot if he gets healthy.

I mean, who knows? He may get back somewhere close to where he was when he’s finally healthy.

Have to say - it would be nice to have someone with his spirit who really appreciates Boston and wanted to be here. I definitely under appreciated that about him when he was here, but after this Kyrie debacle it makes me realize how awesome IT’s attitude and overall character were when here (though the “Brinks truck” comment still gets on my nerves abd was likely a big reason Danny traded him).
Recovering Joe Skeptic, but inching towards a relapse.

IT has a rotten hip and is cooked. Love the guy but he wouldn't even get off the bench in Boston.

Bring him back to reverse the bad karma. I hope he gets back a little of why he lost the past two years. He’s still be a great microwave scorer off the bench. And he’ll definitely be cheap.

If he can play a Larkin role, why not?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I don't want IT seeing the poll results and getting the wrong idea. I agree with all of the positive things said about him in this thread, it's just that I think he would have the wrong expectations if he signed back here - as if nothing has changed.

It would have to be made abundantly clear to him that he is going to be a bench player, and maybe even a deep bench player. The margin between him being a star and him no longer being on an NBA roster is extremely thin due to his size. If he could buy into his role and the culture around him, then it would be great to have him back, I just don't see that as extremely likely. Part of what made him great was his extraordinary confidence.

For what he'd cost there's no downside. Upside is 29 ppg if can ever get back to where he was.  If he can give you even some offense off the bench he's an upgrade to their backcourt as is. To me it's a no brainer to bring him back.
