If the Grizz get the 8th seed but then lose the play-in series to 9, will they be in the lottery?

Correct.

Current 8th seed battle -

8. Grizzlies 32-37
9. Blazers 32-38

10. Suns 30-39
11. Spurs 29-38
12. Kings 29-39
13. Pelicans 29-39

Remaining MEM schedule:

OKC today, TOR 8/9, BOS 8/11, MIL 8/13

All of the teams will essentially have no reason to really compete against them, any other situation and that would be close to a lock for Griz going 0-8. Still hoping half trying by those teams get them 0-8.

Obviously Boston does.

And Milwaukee showed they still want to compete last night v Heat. Toronto is undefeated in bubble, so they are obviously playing hard, even though they are locked into 2nd seed.  I think these teams want to be clicking. Plus even if their starters sit, their benches are better than depleted/slumping Griz team right now.

If Griz ended up with next to worst regular season record in the bubble (ahead of only Wiz), the best pick we can get is 14 (last pick in Lottery), even though, record wise, only 9 teams (Delete 8 and Wiz) had worse records?  That would really stink.  Why did the NBA decide that? What was rationale, I wonder.

Prolly bc not all teams are playing in the bubble. Some teams don’t get to play games to love they’re standing.

I wonder if also they were trying to create/sustain incentive for teams to get to 8/9.   If your reward for winning in the bubble is a first round drubbing by the #1 seed PLUS you go down 5 slots on draft day, would that encourage tanking or "bubble avoidance".

If the Griz don't make the playoffs and end up the 13th or 14th seed, there is a chance, it is a lottery after all.

So as we are burying the Griz, they go out and destroy the Thunder, LOL.  Funny game, bubble basketball.

Ikr, everything is even more unpredictable. That empty Brooklyn team beating Milwaukee, and now this?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
It seems extremely unlikely that two teams will go ahead of the Grizzlies, but I am still holding out hope for the Blazers to move ahead of them. If that's the case, the Blazers can lose the first game and still win the 2nd to advance. Even if the Grizz do hold on to the 8th spot, it still seems extremely plausible for them to lose two in a row to a surging team like the Blazers.

Since we can't get better than the 14th pick anyway, I'll just be happy to see any other team get the 8 spot. Sorry Grizz fans - I'm selfish! In addition, the Blazers stand a much better chance against the Lakers. Unlikely, I know.

For as surprisingly good as the Suns have been the Kings have been equally as bad. No idea what their deal is with Buddy Hield

Those are the odds for the number 1 pick.  What really matters is the odds to get anywhere in the top 4 picks for it to carry over to next year which are:

Team 12 is 6.2%
Team 13 is 5.7%
Team 14 is 2.4%

The Grizz can't be any worse than 14th.  So basically the 9-14 teams will be the teams that don't make the playoffs and their order will be based on their record on March 11, since the Grizz had the best record of the possible NBA playoff teams on that date they would be 14 even if they slip down to 13th during the seeding games.

Now the draft order of playoff teams is based on record including the seeding games, so if MEM holds onto the  playoff spot they could slip from 17th pick all the way down to the 15th if Orl and Brk finish ahead of them.

I hope Portland nails the 8th and Suns keep winning

Grizzlies keep losing

Celtics could use a lottery pick
