I'm a Syracuse grad (and fan) and I'm not on board with this.
I always wonder how different Carmelo would have turned out if drafted by the Pistons.
It would be very interesting. Does Carmelo turn into a more well rounded player? Does the Sheed trade still happen? Does Tayshaun Prince emerge as a versatile defender and shooter?
That really is one of the great what if's in draft history. Taking the Detroit/Anthony side out of it, what does Denver do? Do they take Darko or do they go with Bosh or Wade, then what about Toronto do they go for Wade/Bosh, Darko, or someone else. If both Wade and Bosh are off the board, then what does Miami do and how much different is that whole Miami franchise without Wade there? Does Darko actually develop into a credible NBA player by getting minutes early on or does he still flame out? There aren't many drafts where one decision affects so many championship level teams like that one decision by the Pistons. You change that one decision you alter at least 4 title winners (Detroit and all 3 Miami) not to mention what Lebron ends up doing is so much different.
Speaking on behalf of the Raptors, Vince wanted a trade to be made. He pushed hard for it at the time. Felt as though team needed verteran performers, not more rookies.
Apparently at the time there was rumors that some of the teams garbage players could have been packaged with the number 4 pick to net guys like Redd, Billups, AK47.
There was also an offer of Nash and Dirk that was made at the time for Carter and filler.
