Sorry...that's one thing J.R. Smith doesn't do.

http://www.hoopsrumors.com/2016/10/steins-latest-extensions-jazz-cavs-j-r-smith.html

Stein is reporting that our rumored interest in Smith is real. He says it's only a matter of time of JR looking elsewhere if the Cavs don't budge on the contract, and in that case Boston would look at moving guys to fit him.

I'm not as opposed to this as some are here. Most likely this would just be a one year deal, and he'd try for a more permanent contract next summer somewhere. He'd also bring instant offense and shooting to our second unit, while also weakening the Cavs.

The only issue would be creating the space for him. I'd move Zeller in a heartbeat for him, but he can't be moved until December. I'm not sure I'd move any of our other sizable contracts for him, though.

The Cavs will probably budge in the end, because they really need him. However, it is something to keep an eye on.
I think there is one of two explanations for this. 1. Stein is being told this by JRs agent to try to put pressure on the Cavs. 2. The Celtics are trying to put pressure on their rivals by leaking these fake rumors.

Who are we going to trade to shed space? Amir Johnson and one of Hunter or Young seems like the most plausible. No way I'm giving up Amir, Hunter/Young and the pick it would cost to dump salary just to get JR Smith.

That's not to mention Smith almost certainly wants a multiple year deal which would kill our cap space in the future. Since the C's have stressed financial flexibility above all else in the pursuit of a star, not a chance the C's give up that flexibility for JR Smith.

Yeah, there's very little salary we could effectively move.  Amir, yes, but unless Mickey is ready for a rotation role, that doesn't seem wise.  They could create right around $8 million by moving Jerebko (who'd figure to lose the most minutes with Smith), Hunter, and Young.  But they can't move Zeller, and they can't move Green (who'd also lose minutes).

Is Cleveland refusing to even offer $8 mil?  I get kicking the tires, but I can't see anything happening.

Yep that is the problem.  Boston has no real way to create cap space to sign Smith without giving up a better player.  Now if there was some large scale move that created the cap space that might be intriguing.  Something like this for example

BOS - Noel, Covington
PHI - Smart, Jerekbo, 2017 PHI 2nd (from Bos), 2018 BKN 2nd (from Bos)
BKN (or some other team with cap space) - Johnson

Boston creates more than enough cap and roster room to sign Smith and ends up with

PG - Thomas, Rozier, Jackson
SG - Bradley, Smith, Hunter
SF - Crowder, Brown, Green
PF - Horford, Covington, Mickey
C - Noel, Olynyk, Zeller
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench -

Yeah not surprised.

Ha, I figured that they would finally give in and pay him. I wonder if there will be any options on that. It'll be funny if he now starts going downhill and not playing the right way now that he's got paid.

That's all he got paid? I thought teams were throwing money around for fun? He must be old.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

Glad that's over, trying to talk myself out of J.R. Smith - probably one of my top 10 least favorite players in the league - was more difficult than I would have thought it would have been. The move did have that final piece of the puzzle feel to it, especially since it would have weakened the Cavs.

I get the talent and the new salary cap but that's a lot of money for a 31 year old with a streaky game and a streaky personality. The Cavs can have him.

Lol.   I great teams are allowed to have one knucklehead.  It's the Dennis Rodman rule.  If your team is a contender, you get a knucklehead roster spot.

It's a little more complicated if the knucklehead is your best player.   Detroit landing Rasheed Wallace seemed to work out well for them.  Maybe we can flourish with DeMarcus Cousins taking our Knucklehead slot.

he answered questions about it in a ski mask. Whats up with that? Him and Lebron apparently laughed about his alter ego in the mask.

Rasheed wasn't Detroit's best player, though. Otherwise, I agree.

have you read the article?

Lue replaced starting 5 with end of the bench players, with 3:49 left in 3rd quarter, because of no effort on D (too many points in paint) from starting five

ballsy move from the 2nd year coach in LeBron team, respect
