It's Summer Olympics time so I decided to watch a couple women's basketball games. To be honest I never watch WNBA basketball. In the distant past what I had seen reminded me of high school basketball with poor shooting, lazy passing and relatively dull content.

However after watching Australia - Brazil and USA - Senegal games I'm beginning to wonder that maybe I'm missing out on something. These women looked great! They were far more talented than I remembered. They shot the ball extremely well. Their defense looked good and the competitive nature of the Australia-Brazil game was definitely not boring.

Don't know if what I watched is indicative of the WNBA skill level. If it was, then I would consider watching women play on a regular basis. Maybe someone on the board who watches WNBA games could elaborate on their play.

The closest professional woman's team to Boston are the Connecticut Sun's. And, there doesn't seem to be any Boston connection with that franchise. I'm wondering if it's time to bring an WNBA team to Boston? It might be entertaining for the Celtics to have a sister team in town. Anyone thinks this might be a good idea?

The Celtics already have a sister team.  It's called the Brooklyn Nets.

That was my first thought.  I paid just as much attention to the Nets as I did the Celtics last season. I agonized over every single Nets win.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
With only 12 teams currently in the WNBA and salaries nearing D-League territory (minimum - $35,000, maximum - $107,000), I think it will be mighty difficult adding a third team to the New York/New England region.

The Sun was definitely created to be New England's team, but as the OP points out, there really is no association between them and the Celtics. This seems like a pretty easy fix if one team would reach out to the other. Having a couple of games a year at TD Garden would be great, but Mohegan probably doesn't want to lose out on any potential revenue.

TP: All excellent info... thanks for sharing.

Revenue is likely a major issue. Another might be fear that the team might do well and possibly the League could look into setting up another franchise near Boston.

I'd be down to watch a lady Celtics team during the summer and early fall when the Celts aren't playing.

Sure. And let's send Olynyk to that team while we're at it.

Too funny.  And true.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Buy him out. Make Mohegan CEO of the Red Claws or junior partner or something. Move the team to Boston.
