I'm certain Ainge will protect max level cap space through 2018 until he gets his leading man.

Chris Paul is too old for the Celts' timeline though, I think.  He's not a guy you can expect to be your focal point anymore, not as a scorer anyway.

Do you think there is any way for the Celtics to build a good enough roster to beat the Warriors?

You know it's gonna happen sooner or later. Danny is going to swing for the fences for another big-name talent...he had reportedly set his sights on Garnett for five years, and even still had to make moves to acquire Allen before a deal was finally struck. But think how transformation it was to do that...and to he just came close to repeating the very same thing!

I don't think there's ever been a gm that has shown so much patience and foresight in building up assets and gradually targeting big name players.

If there's one thing I've learned about Danny this past few days, is that we shouldn't underestimate his ability. For all we know, we may still have a shot at Durant (though I have to question his leadership and willingness to shoulder the burden for his team) but if I'm Ainge, I'm setting my sights on the next all-star player.....looking to turn the page.

Who would it be?

Hate to burst your bubble, but there's no one left to trade for.

Boogie could terrorize the warrior interior scoring     Our guards lock down Curry .

We'd have a shot.

Boogie would be my choice ......that's just me tho. ;)

I actually agree with this. The Warriors are stoppable. Cleveland did it and they don't have our defensive personal. They do have LBJ though, haha. But we need Cousins and Westbrook. We can beat them.

If we can keep our guards and wings, and throw our remaining Nets picks at the Kings for Cousins we just might have a chance.

Think keeping two of Crowder, Bradley, and Smart. While bringing in Westbrook/Cousins, and signing Hayward in the off-season would be a team strong enough to beat GSW.

I'm not convinced GSW is unbeatable. They can be beaten, and their bench is reduced to worrying signs of players who cannot shoot consistently.

I'm ready to go homegrown for the core from here.

TRoz is gonna be a multiyear AS in this league, IMO.

Brown could develop similarly.

And I want to see what young Mr. Zizic can do at center.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
If you look at the bright side, at least we just acquired our Ray Allen (Horford) without giving up the #3 pick for him. Danny will have a myriad of options, but I am on the Boogie train, as long as we don't completely deplete our team for him. I would also be more than happy to welcome in Blake next year.

Those talking about preserving the cap space until 2018 just need to be aware that - pending some trades - we are going to be on the hook for some substantial pay increases in IT, Bradley, and Smart. I realize there are players on the FA market that year that may look more attractive than those three, but it would be nice to upgrade now or in 2017 so that we can use their Bird rights to go [well] over the cap and keep them.

The Warriors are beatable. They rely fully on shooting, and nothing else, which doesn't cut it in the playoffs. They will win a ton of regular season games, but when defenses tighten up they will be vulnerable.

I am convinced Gordo is ours, in the off-season next year.

And I agree about Cousins. I'd also look into Westbrook.

What I wouldn't do is invest in Horford, and then default back to the pointless treadmill of a youth movement. Unlike some here, I don't see any drafted all-stars on this roster and I am pessimistic the remaining draft choices will produce one, given Ainge's draft performance.

By signing Horford, you commit to chasing a title now. Stay the course of spinning picks and youth for veteran stars when you can.

The thing is Horford isn't the stat stuffer everyone is expecting. But he's the calm and confident leader that will put the work in. I will most assuredly be convinced if we brought in DMC/Westbrook that they would listen to him, and allow him to lead by example. It doesn't mean making the tough shots, but being the one to calm teammates down in a frantic and worried environment.

I know it's not Jaylen Brown.  But knowing Ainge, I'm pretty sure he'd draft another doozy next year.

I usually ignore your repeated posts in other threads, but now I KNOW that you're just trolling people here.  The question had nothing to do with who the Celtics just drafted... the question is who is the NEXT target.  The only way you could possibly even mention Jayln Brown is if you said "use him in a trade for ___ b/c I don't like Jayln."  At no point in your post did you even bother to answer the question.

That said, I think the main target has to be Demarcus Cousins.  He'd really round out this team very well.  Second choice (fairly distance second to Cousins IMO) is Butler.  After that I'm not so sure, but I definitely wouldn't consider Hayward a "big target".

I agree with you overall but I just would say don't be surprised to see his numbers go up in rebounding and scoring a bit.  He is the type to do what the team needs and ATL didn't need him to shoot and secure rebounds (over boxing out) as much as we probably will and he was playing with such a great scorer and rebounder in Millsap.   I think he will finish with 9-10 rebs per game this year.  We will see on scoring.

Completely agree with that assessment. Horford will do things leadership-wise for this team that won't show up in the stat sheet.

I'd prefer to add Cousins and Hayward, frankly. But if Westbrook would confirm that he views the Celtics as more than one-and-done, I'd certainly take a hard look at that. Most in the OKC punditry think he'll be traded now for picks and youth, and we have plenty of both - assuming Presti likes any of it, which is not a safe assumption.
