I thought Bill Simmons was great until he cheered the James Young pick as if we just robbed the NBA. Still think he's great just don't think highly of his make believe GM skills.
Many of us cheered the James Young pick. In fact, go back and look up the draft grades that year posted on ESPN and other sports websites. You'll find the Young pick is a B+ or an A in almost all of them.
It just didn't work out. It happens.
I liked the Young pick for sure.
No one should feel bad for liking the pick at the time.
He was a 6' 7" SG with a 7' wingspan and an 11' 7.5" max vertical reach and a sweet looking shooting stroke and he was still 18 years old and had played very well in the tournament (meaning he at least seemed like he was competent with his peers).
That's a recipe for a good, high-upside potential pick. And it was just a #17 pick.
Unfortunately, potential is just potential until it is realized.
I never thought much of him, never got what the fuss was about.
He was a pretty good shooter (not nearly as great as people are trying to suggest, but pretty good) and had good size at the SG/SF spot, and that was really all there was to it.
He couldn't defend, couldn't handle the ball, couldn't pass, and his overall scoring numbers for the season were solid but nothing outlandish. I didn't think he'd be THIS bad, but I never expected he'd amount to much more then a shooter off the bench or a weak starter.
If there is one thing I've learned it's that one dimensional players (guys who only do one thing at a high level) rarely ever become much in the NBA.
