I thought Bill Simmons was great until he cheered the James Young pick as if we just robbed the NBA. Still think he's great just don't think highly of his make believe GM skills.

Many of us cheered the James Young pick. In fact, go back and look up the draft grades that year posted on ESPN and other sports websites. You'll find the Young pick is a B+ or an A in almost all of them.

It just didn't work out. It happens.
I liked the Young pick for sure.
ainge swung big on the young pick. at that place in the draft i dont blame him. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. i personally like that he took a chance to grab a young talent (no pun intended) that late in the draft.

which, to me, means that he could very well roll the dice this draft again. it should be interesting.

In retrospect things with Young could have been completely different if we had sucked for multiple years and could force-feed him game time. He may have taken a Zach Levine trajectory where he's literally the worst player in the league for a while before he eventually starts to figure it out.

I think Ainge was anticipating a multi-year tank when he drafted Young. It just didn't turn out that way and we didn't have the time or space to let him develop at his own pace.

(if you want to project this onto this year's draft, maybe it means we stay away from super raw prospects like Chriss)

Great words from a great man

No one should feel bad for liking the pick at the time.

He was a 6' 7" SG with a 7' wingspan and an 11' 7.5" max vertical reach and a sweet looking shooting stroke and he was still 18 years old and had played very well in the tournament (meaning he at least seemed like he was competent with his peers).

That's a recipe for a good, high-upside potential pick.  And it was just a #17 pick.

Unfortunately, potential is just potential until it is realized.

NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

It seemed like Jaylen Brown beat him one on one. Or at least gained his respect.

I hope we get either Butler or Brown in one week.

My sarcasm didn't translate well in that post. I too thought Young was a good pick.
ok fine

I never thought much of him, never got what the fuss was about.

He was a pretty good shooter (not nearly as great as people are trying to suggest, but pretty good) and had good size at the SG/SF spot, and that was really all there was to it.

He couldn't defend, couldn't handle the ball, couldn't pass, and his overall scoring numbers for the season were solid but nothing outlandish.  I didn't think he'd be THIS bad, but I never expected he'd amount to much more then a shooter off the bench or a weak starter.

If there is one thing I've learned it's that one dimensional players (guys who only do one thing at a high level) rarely ever become much in the NBA.

He compares Jaylen Brown to himself.  Watching both Jaylen Brown's highschool and college tape it makes a lot of sense.  Both Butler and Brown played out of position at forward in college but were really naturally guard/forwards.
