NO way that should have been a jump ball---and then have the ref totally GIVE the ball back to Brooklyn with that horrible (on purpose-?) toss.

The entire game looked rigged to me---how about that double dribble they called on ET--?

Refs were shaving points or something in this one----AWFUL--!!

I thought the reffing was awful too, but there were also a couple bad non-calls that went our way.

Play of the week from Marcus!

ive been waiting for someone to do that for years.   Rondo use to do this all the time and I kept waiting for it to back fire on him.

I remember watching some game in the early 90s and a ball was slowly rolling out of bounds in the back court... Dee Brown was very slowly following the ball as it rolled out of bounds... it was clear the other team had touched it...  Then the refs inexplicably said it was last touched by Boston.  I remember the commentator saying something like, "Welp, that's a lesson for young Dee Brown... should have just picked up the ball".    I kept waiting for something like that to happen with Rondo...   someone would grab the ball as he rolled it and he'd think twice about attempting it again.   Never happened, though.

Pretty sure it did happen once, probably in the playoffs. Rondo was letting the ball bounce (or roll) up the court when the opposing pg dove for the ball and grabbed it. When he stood up and started to dribble Rondo stole the ball back so we ended up with a 5v4 and I think we scored. I'd guess it was 2010 or 2011.

Googled this (a cb thread came up). According to one Roy Hobbs, Rafer Alston stole the ball from Rondo and Rajon stole it back. Sorry you missed it.

I don't think I had ever seen a play like this. Obviously extremely careless play by Sloan, but goodness, what an explosive play by Marcus.
Shame it was a bad jump-ball call. Would've been steal of the Celtic's season thus far.

Dumb play by Sloan, great play by Smart, and that was definitely not a jump ball.

I would love to see these officials investigated because some of these calls are out and out blatant and too easy to not get right. the big problem......who could you trust???

Looks like they called the jump ball based on the moment when Sloan and Smart both had their hands on it.  Smart ripped it away so fast that it seems dubious, but as others have noted in that case the correct call would be a travel, so it was actually a slightly favorable call for us.  Great hustle play in any event.

Yep, fuzzy on the details as well but Im pretty sure it happened to Rondo once. Didnt stop him from doing it again though.

Also, we're all referring to Marcus as the Cobra now, right? Or Cobra Commander?

Edit: I see there is already a thread regarding this.  I'm on board

Chris Paul has his bigs roll the ball up the court all the time; even if the game clock is running it give the team more time on the shot clock to operate in the half court.

Marcus is actually traveling, as you are not allowed to roll on the floor (to gain an advantage) or attempt to stand up while holding the ball. The former is definitely an NBA rule (check it out before flaming me), the latter might be FIBA, as I haven't seen it in the NBA rule book.

The rule - Rule 10, Section XIV (h) - states:

Quote
A player who falls to the floor while holding the ball, or while coming to a stop, may not gain an advantage by sliding.

As Smart did not gain possession of the ball until he was already on the ground, this would not apply.  If you watch the replay, he rather expertly keeps a pivot foot planted and starts dribbling while standing up, so he would not be called for a travel there either.  It actually took a lot of awareness and coordination to keep from traveling in that situation.  I was surprised at it looking on the replay how well he did.  If the refs had called it correctly, Smart would have either been fouled or maintained possession of a live ball.

Indeed. I watched the replay quickly last night and it did seem from the ref's angle that the Nets player had a hand on the ball for the duration (Smart's body blocking the view of the ball). So if that's true, not really going to fault him for this one.

Though it was quite a bad call. I'll need to rewatch the replay to see if that hypothesis holds up.
