I've gotta think we're going to be in good shape. DWill and JJ are getting older and Brooke Lopez has yet to prove that he can stay healthy. Livingston is gone and Pierce/Garnett won't help much. Meanwhile, the Nets will likely have a weak draft pick next year, since they get the worse of theirs or Atlanta's.
2015-16: They have absolutely no cap space. They're stuck with DWill, JJ and BL and if Lopez doesn't stay healthy, they could be really bad. True, two of those will be expiring contracts, but I just don't see them getting much for them. We have a pretty good shot at a lottery pick in 2016.
2016-17: Only one contract (DWill, $22m) still on the books, so they have a chance to pick up some decent free agents. Here's the question: For free agents looking to play in New York, Brooklyn offers a decent location. That will be the big draw, although the Knicks have even more room than the Nets will. Geography will be the big draw, since they likely won't have any big players and nothing in the way of good draft picks to trade. But if FAs are taking the attitude of "I want to win now," then Brooklyn will be in trouble. You'd have to sign two big free agents, but they'd be the only strong players on the team. Also, some guy named Durant (I'm told he's pretty good.) will be a FA at the end of the 15-16 season. No doubt there will be a bunch of players looking to pair themselves up with Durant and head somewhere with an existing superstar and cap room.
2017-18: See above. It could still be ugly.
I'm a born pessimist, so I don't want to get too far ahead of myself here, but I think there's a good chance that we end up with a couple of nice picks in 16-18.
