However, along those same lines, when have the Celtics ever actually had the cap space to make a real free agency splash over the past 20 years or so?

I thought we had some cash during the Pitino era.  David West spurred us.

We will find out soon :

We don't have nice weather to offer, period.  I love it when folks say Boston is a great free agent destination.    Keep telling yourself that enough it may be true, NOT!   I can only think of 1-2 great signings for the Celtics on the free agent market and they were long ago.

When the team was winning, it usually had its pick of MLE-level free agents.  Put together a supporting cast that is good enough to make the playoffs on its own and there will be stars who want to come to Boston.

if david west had decided on us instead of indy, he'd probably have a title now. now he has no chance.

The celtics have never been an attractive FA destination for stars. sure we have signed alot of top level MLE guys when the C's were competitive in the east, but no stars.

all our stars have either been home grown, or through trades. KG didnt want to come here initially.

The draft is no guarantee. if you have a chance to go out and grab a big man who averages 26ppg and 10rpg you go get him. it puts us closer to contention than just sitting around and getting pick#6 each year

i'm sure someone has stated this already but we've never had the cap space to go after a superstar. so no one knows weather a superstar would come here via free agency.

and david west doesn't count as a superstar. he's a great player but not a superstar.

Sadly taking my green glasses off, I think that's pretty doubtful.

I think if you added West to the 2012 team you'd have had a pretty good chance of beating the Thunder. We were desperate for another big then.
