Wouldnt see why we would want Miller.. Last couple years absolutely. But a 37 year old on a rebuilding team with another year on his contract and already aquiring Rondo? Love Miller but it doesnt make much sense.
Yeah, some fair points.
It's definately a 50/50 move, and I think it's something we would do more for cap benefits than for actual team benefits.
Bass = $6.5M / 2 (fully guaranteed)
Miller = $5M / 2 (only $2M guaranteed in second year)
That means by doing this deal we would basically be saving $1.5M in cap space this year, then waive him at the end of the season and save $5.5M off our cap next year.
The secondary benefit for me would be getting rid of Bass, which is a benefit in itself because as long as he is here eating up minutes we can't give guys like Humphries, Olynyk and Faverani the minutes they need to develeop and/or show off their skills...hence the move also potentially increases the trade value of Hump, Olynyk, Fav.
On the other hand I'm not as concerned about our young guys at the PG spot. Neither Pressy nor Crawford is on a multi-year deal at the moment IIRC, Pressy probably could use sometime in the D league (to develop that jumper) and Crawford IMHO probably won't be a Celtic two days from now. As a result I don't think a front court of Miller/Bayless (or Bayless/Miller) hurts our youth development.
Regarding the Crawford comment, I have a strong feeling that Bayless was brought in to replace Crawford, who I get the feeling is about to go out in a trade. Even though he is fairly young and talented, I really don't see him as a core 'building block' for the Celtics future. At the same time he is getting a lot of attention around the league, and the Celtics are reportedly getting a lot of trade interest. The Bayless move allows Boston to take advantage of Crawford's trade value, while essentially getting another Crawford back. If they do plan to keep Crawford and Bayless then the deal makes little sense to me because Crawford would become the 6th man once Rondo returns (behind Rondo and Bradley) and then Bayless would be buried deep on the bench just like Brooks and Bogans are now. It only makes sense that Crawford is being traded out and Bayless is being brougth in to take over the starting PG role until Rondo returns. Once that happens PG rotation becomes Rondo/Miller and the SG rotation becomes Bradley/Bayless, with Brooks getting some occasional minutes as a third tier SG.
So I'm thinking Miller would then make a lot of sense. The move saves us a bit of money now, saves us a lot of money next year, increases opporutnities to showcase our young bigs, and it gives us a genuine backup PG behind Rondo / Bayless.
I would feel a bit guilty bringing a respected vat like Andre Miller on to a potentially lottery team though, and I do feel he deserves to play on a contender at this point in his career. That said the NBA is a business, and if a move benefits the team then I guess you have to do it (Chauncey Billups amnesty a couple of years back was a perfect example). Plus Miller would only need to play a half season here, then next year he'd be waived and would be free to sign for a contender and chase a ring.
