His first championship contending team was a combination of finesse and scoring guys, complimented by grit and muscle guys.
Pierce, Allen, KG
PJ, Perkins, Posey, Powe, TAllen & Rondo
Sure, he has drafted who he feels are the best possible players he can, but there are some real similarities between these players, regardless of position. Let's look at some similar characteristics of the youngest guys he's been adding through the draft and free agent signings.
By Position:
Faverani and Colton Iverson:
1. I don't think Ainge sees either as a starter.
2. But Faverani will be good back up.
3. Colton Iverson is a jungle Jim Luscatoff type.
Conclusion: Both are very young, very physical big guys.
Sullinger and Olynyk:
1. Olynyk is more of a finesse, facilitator type.
2. Sullinger is brute force with offensive finesse
3. Not sure either are starters - 2-3 years will tell us
Conclusion:
Olynyk is more finiesse, but doesn't shy away from contact. Sullinger is lwon Powe with more size and a much higher skill set.
Avery Bradley, Phil Pressey:
1. Bradley is TAllen / James Posey type in a 6' 2" body
2. Phil Pressey is the same in a 5' 11" body
Conclusion: If diminutive for their position, both are tough as nails dirty work guys. Neithe rpoject as long term starters.
Faverani, Iverson, Sullinger, Bradley, Pressey
Imagine these guys all behind true starters:
Mid level center / Faverani / Iverson
Max Level PF / Sullinger / Olynyk
Green / Crash / Player
Max Level shooting guard / Bradley / Player
Rondo / Pressey / Player
Now your bench is:
Faverani / Iverson
Sullinger / Olynyk
Crash or similar
Bradley / Shooter
Pressey / Vet back up with decent size
That's contention and I think we're about 1-2 years away from that. If we're able to clear cap over the next two seasons we will have significant money to go after some max players in the 2015 summer.
Ainge is laying foundation right now - the finishing touches are on the way.
