No thanks, I don't want to become the Grizzlies 2.0.

Z-Bo really struggled in the playoffs, and he's going to get worse as he gets two years older.

Sullinger may never be as good as Z-Bo, but there is the potential 10/10. Which is good enough for any team.

Z-Bo would be too old. Need someone younger. Probably aged 27 or under.

If you can get Marc Gasol and LaMarcus Aldridge to play with Rondo and Green you're good to contend for 5-6 years.

One of Sully/KO, Bradley, the 2014 pick, TPEs or veteran contracts and other young pieces should go to get them, and your bench could be thin, but I hope Danny is aiming for this.

Sullinger, multiple 1st round picks, expiring a for a 32 year Z-Bo that still won't make us good enough to contend.  No thanks.  We would be stuck in mediocre land if we did that.

Then my question is: who is good enough to turn the Celtics into a contender?

I really don't think we have enough assets just yet/combined with available franchise players to go that route.  Sully might just be as good as Randolph in a year or 2 as Randolph approaches 35, and Sully approaches 25.   I think Ainge needs to be patient, consider this a lost year, see what transpires next year in the draft, and go from there.  Plus I wouldn't want to give up any of our future firsts unless if its a slam dunk especially not really knowing just how valuable the Nets picks and our own will be.

My question isn't who can the Celtics realistically acquire, it is who would be good enough to justify reloading rather than rebuilding if the Celtics could make a magical, unrealistic trade to acquire him?

Ok gotcha.  It would have to be an all star caliber player I would at least 28 and younger, preferably a big guy.  Someone like Aldridge, Love, Cousins, Griffin.  Not many young franchise shooting guards.  A dropoff after Harden. I do like the Thompson kid on GS.  There are only of handful of SF IMO worth paying for the upgrade over Green.  Lebron, Durant, Melo, George.  The problem is none of the guys are available but hopefully in a couple years or so 1 or 2 of them will want out, and we'll have the assets to pounce on it.  For any of these guys I would some combination of our young players excluding Rondo, with draft picks, and a close to expiring contract.

LeBron
Durant
Harden
Griffin
M. Gasol
Howard

That's the list of guys who would definitely make us a contender if we were just getting them, assuming a competent and complementary supporting cast.  Obviously I'm leaving out point guards like Paul, Parker, Westbrook, and Curry, because they wouldn't fit with Rondo.

As others have said, there's another tier of players that might be enough if we got 2-3 of them to add to Rondo.

In any case, I think it's fair to say nobody in the first group is likely to be available for trade anytime soon -- certainly not for what we have to offer, sans Rondo.  Some players in that second tier will probably be available, but acquiring not just one but two or even three of them might be nearly as difficult as getting one player from that first group.

I wonder if Melo could be tempted to come to Boston, or if Boston fans would even want him?

No thanks.  Pass (something Melo never does).

The snitchster is the consumate anti-Celtic.

I just got through watching the online film of the a sophomore Wilt Chamberlain. You put an incredible athlete in the middle and the Celtics would immediately change direction. (I forgot just how super athletic he was when he was young). All those complimentary pieces that the Celtics have would immediately become more valuable. Sullinger, Oylnyk, could be a force as they couldn't be double teamed. And the athletes like Brooks and Green would be quick outlets. And Rondo would come alive with an inside presence that could run like a deer (KG played more of a SF type position on offense).
Miami is one of the few teams that are topnotch without a big man. I don't see them as a good role model for a creating a new top team.

Answer to the question in the subject line is SSSOOO OBVIOUS:

Wiggins, Parker, Randle...

thats our best bet. Lebron, melo, durant. Are not walking through those doors.

Y'all are misunderstanding the OP's question.  Assume for whatever reason superstars become available - who are today's equivalent of KG and Ray at the time we traded for them? Long time Allstars starting toward the back end of their careers with a 3-5 window of good to great play that have not yet won a championship.

Who here thought that we would be able to trade for Ray Allen and KG back in 07?  They'll never be available etc... all the same excuses that you hear now.

The question the OP is asking  who in the league - if we are to make a similar trade in today's reality - would be the KG and Ray Allen that we should trade for to pair with Rondo (modern day Celtic holdover like Pierce was).

Everyone is on the block except for Rondo.

What if Carmelo has a falling out with the Knicks?
What if Love wants out of Minn?

Lol at Blake Griffin. Maybe help us in the regular season but not a guy who will help us win in the playoffs.
