It looks like they're going the bottom out approach as well. But aren't they manated to spend more money than where their cap number is? 90% of roughly $60, right? Hoopshype has them at like $35 million.

I wonder if they woud take on Humphries, Bass, Crawford and Bogans for a protected 2nd rounder.

I have a feeling that if they had to sign more players to get closer to the salary floor, they'd be able to find better players on the FA market they could sign to 1-year deals.

Better talent wise? I'm absolutely sure of it. I just dont think their looking for talent. Maybe trying to sneak Bass in there is a little much, but, say Humphries, crawford, Bogans for a top 55 protected 2nd rounder. Allows the 76ers to reach their floor and gives the celtics an additional TE and a compressed roster...

How much do the 76ers need to spend before the season? Does anyone know?

I wasn't thinking from a talent perspective although there's definitely more talented players out there.  I was thinking from an organizational standpoint -- players that would be happy collecting paychecks while producing little to nothing on the court.

If the team doesn't reach the salary floor, they'll just be charged the difference and that money redistributed to the team's players.  They might take on a small salary as a favor to another team because they have to pay that money anyways, but they're not going to take on a contract that makes them exceed the salary floor unless the get something useful in return.

I don't see them taking on any future salary, like Bass or Lee, that's for sure.

Maybe Humphries.  But I don't see them giving up much for him.  So, what's in it for us?  Might as well save him in hopes of the longshot that his expiring contract can be used better.

It saves us money and we won't have to pay luxury tax. We would also get a $12 million dollar trade exception which would be more valuable than an expiring contract.

I predict they get the #1 pick, using the weighted ping pong ball system in place.

I think they are a top candidate to take on someone like Humphries.  He would allow them to get to the salary floor, give them some depth, and not really compromise their tanking or their cap space for next year.

BTW, I LOVE what Philly is doing here.  It is rare you have an opportunity like they have to truly bottom out and reload in such a short timeframe.  They have a chance to go into 2014-2015 with up to 4 blue-chip prospects (Noel, Carter-Williams, their lottery pick, and NOH lottery pick), and a ton of cap space.

They fell into that deal with the Hornets, and it really presented them with a golden opportunity.  In general, I am not a fan of tanking, but when an opportunity like that falls into your lap, you need to jump at it.

And the best part is next years free agent class will be loaded with really good veterans, that they can add to their young guys, and help them develop quickly and the right way.

TP for insight. I forgot the Sixers have Michael Carter-Williams and I haven't followed their summer to see how he's progressing. But the fact that they can have three legitimate young talents on their roster by this time next year in just two sophomores and a rookie is enticing for their fan base I'm sure.

Me too. Philly did a great job this summer.

I'm not sold on the NO pick being a lottery pick, but it's totally worth the gamble for the sixers, Holliday is overrated, they sold high on him IMO.

I think you can ask them for their 2014 second rounder and the TPE. Humphries' contract could be way more valuable around the trade deadline, but the Cs need minutes for Kelly & Sully. If they're not giving you anything valuable, you can try to trade Humphries at the deadline yourself, but I'd rather send him now to the Sixers.
