I think he would've got it done by the Mavs.  It would've been a life-time achievement award plus a championship.  I guess with all the wins he brought to the Nets there's an argument there, although I try to stay out of guessing retired number because every team is different.

  I don't think Kidd telling Cuban that he might stay if they payed him triple what he was going to sign for elsewhere would have improved Mark's attitude on the situation.

I think that the Nets should retire his number.  That team has been a legit contender once in its NBA history and has been even merely relevant rarely in its NBA history.

Their only retired numbers from their NBA run (which now spans over 30 years) are Drazen Petrovic, John Williamson (part ABA, part NBA), and Buck Williams.  Kidd is a far better player than all three, his contributions to the Nets franchise were greater, and his Nets teams were better.

The Suns and Mavericks are less certain, in my opinion.

Derek Harper is probably more deserving than Jason Kidd in having his number retired by the Mavs, I mean Harper is the Mavs all time leader in assists and steals, and is 4th all time in points, 3rd all time in win shares (2nd in defensive win shares), 3rd all time in games played, all of which are ahead of Kidd.  Michael Finley is also more deserving than Kidd.  But as I said earlier, Dirk is really the only guy that should have his number up there, but I wouldn't really question Finley or Harper.

i love Cuban. He is a smart smart man. I love that video where he looks Skip Bayless look like a fool by backing up his arguement with a ridiculous amount of knowledge. He knows what he is doing in Dallas and isnt just a crazy money thrower.

There is only one Maverick in its entire franchise history that deserves to have his number retired and when he retires he will get it up in the rafters almost immediately.  Period.
