there are also 2 VERY different eras in play.

Pre 2007, the Celtics were a joke. Pierce had to play through a couple of rebuilds and messy leadership - Pitino/Wallace, followed by Ainge/Doc having a couple of bumpy years.

Post 2007, the Celtics are title contenders year in, year out. Doc and Danny have become some of the best in the business. The Celtics organization is admired by players, coaches, casual fans, etc.

The trade request and Ray's gripes on his way out are different. Nonetheless, Pierce and Ray were both looking out for number one. Pierce in his 20s was a very selfish player, and not the epitome of what a Celtic is. That has changed as he has matured. We've come along way since 2005.

Meanwhile Ray is older, wiser, presumed to be classier, and yet here we are with Ray unable to take a role that is best for the team. I don't blame Ray for wanting to leave. His ego was hurt. Lets just not make him out to be a victim, or claim that he still has starter skills.

that was the most fun for me during that time.
we were not winning all are games but when we did is was so much sweeter. i dont think paul was about self. think ainge was like "here is the ball..do what you want"
loved walker and pierce..which i feel is the best one to punch in nba history. i never saw this team as a joke  dino radja was my hero.

so many reason to still watch. so huge watching paul tony and other beat la with shaq and kobe...

unheard and we were suppose to get stomped on..
but thats when shaq gave capt his name..

Maybe i am ridiculous... but i believe that teams should make contracts that penalize a player if they demand to be traded.
When a player makes those kinds of demands it ruins his trade value and puts the team in a lose-lose position. So to compensate, the player should lose a % of their salary owed to them, making them easier to move. Lets say, their original salary would still count towards the cap, but there'd be a big chunk of "ghost" money that the new club wouldnt need to actually pay.

As Interceptor said and others have alluded to, intent really must be scrutinized in order to even try to equate what Judas did and the Captain did.

Judas' intent was spite and retribution. He is playing for the team who eliminated the Celtics two years in a row for less money. Allen is NOT an "if you can't beat'em, join'em" kinda guy. He's too competitive, I'll give him that.....However, he chose to play for a team that has hurt and can again hurt the Celtics' chances for 18 because his pride was hurt and he felt unloved....boohoohoo....his direct intent is to hurt the Cs chances for 18.

I am having a hard time 1. seeing why people can't see this clearly and 2. if they do see it, how they can  remain apologists for Allen and still root for the Cs.

Allen also banked on his New England popularity to quell or minimize the amount of flak he would take from the fans, and he misjudged that badly, which is what prompted his disingenuous "Thank You?" (It should have said "blank you") advertisement in the Globe. Nice try Judas.

Whatever Paul Pierce's intent was (and threatening to come out and demand a trade and doing it are not even close to being the same thing), it wasn't to spite the Celtics organization and fans out of vindictiveness. That is what Judas did.

Allen had the mens rea, PP did not.

It remains to be seen if Ray Allen will be a factor in the Celtics vs Heat games this season. It would be a real smack down to his ego if he is shut down by Courtney Lee or worse yet, Avery Bradley. This would make Doc look like the smart one and Ray like a ....... Bad guy.

Not to mention, Rondo will be talkin some junk at him.

PP situation was nothing like this, I never felt he was out on a limb because of his desire to play on a better team.

Completely agree.

Actually, if Wade and Allen are out there at the same time, I could see Bradley on Wade as he has done in the past, and that leaves Rondo on Judas. ...and you know what happens when Rondo is motivated...can't wait to see it.

Karma is gonna get Allen for his spitefulness.
