Setting aside the issue of whether Green can or cannot be traded, the hypothetical of green being involved in a potential Dwight Howard deal is interesting.
I'm not saying I'm advocating it or want it - I really like our team as is. Why I say it's interesting is because Boston, who no one thought had anywhere near the assets to complete a blockbuster trade like one needed to get Howard, has somehow accumulated enough assets to be a serious trade candidate for Howard if they chose to do so.
How? Danny Ainge is how...
In any trade Orlando completes for Howard, you'd have to ask two key questions:
1. Who is the best player I'm getting back in the package and how does my future look with that player?
2. If I'm not getting a marquee player back how does the young "crop" of players that I'm getting project out over 2-3 years?
To answer question # 1, Rondo would be by far, when considering the rumors we've heard, the single most dominant player Orlando could get back in a trade. The other names most commonly thrown around are Brook Lopez and Andrew Bynum. If I'm Orlando's GM I would take Rondo over those two guys every day of the week and seven times on Sunday. It isn't even close for me...and that's not because I'm a Celtic fan. Rondo has a record of being an elite, dominant player when it matters the most and he makes everyone around him better.
Rondo, Jeff Green, Fab Melo & picks would be a nice haul for Howard - mainly because you could say that Rondo's positive impact on any team might be as good or better than Howard, period. Then you throw in Green and if you think Melo will pan out...you've received a nice package moving forward.
If you want just young players it really depends on what you think of Melo, Sully, Bradley, Green, etc...
if you think those four players can be good, steady quality starters in our league, then you are only a few max moves away from being very competitive again.
Melo
Sully
Green
Bradley
Personally, I wouldn't make the trade if it involved Rondo because I think that overall, Rondo is a better player than Howard - he truly makes everyone around him better and he can dominate games every bit as much, if not more, than Howard does. More importantly, he does it when it matters the most - Howard sometimes disappears.
But - to the original thread - if Boston wanted to trade for Howard, I think they could steal the show and that would be a clear nod to the great job done by Danny Ainge in accumulating a large and varied crop of basketball assets.
In the end - if it involves Rondo - I'm out.
But if it were, Melo, Sully, Green & Bradley with a 3rd team involved to make it work somehow, you have to consider it.
And again, if you think Bradley is real long term, that Sully can be a 20-10 guy at PF And Melo will become a good defensive center, Green a competent scorer....that could be a better haul for Orlando than packages built around an injury prone Bynum or a soft Brook Lopez...
