I think we're all overlooking him. Personal issues have gotten the best of his career so far.
High basketball IQ. Plays defense. Athletic.
Last year, he was playing off pure instinct. No plays. Not even a defensive scheme.
He can easily be the next Stiemsma for us, possibly more.
Hopefully Stiems stays, Williams pans out and we get an insane shotblocking duo off the bench.
Sean Williams does not have a high basketball IQ IMO.
Agreed. His floor position, even at BC, was terrible.
He cares more about making highlight reel blocks than he does making fundamental defensive plays.
When players make highlight reel blocks it is usually because they feel confident in the play they are making. The task of the coaches is to help transfer that confidence to other areas on the court. If Williams hustles, plays defense, rebounds and runs the court well, that would be enough to fill a real void the Celtics have. Especially with REBOUNDING.
The fact that Williams didn't garner any playing time tells us one of two things. He was out of shape or he couldn't grasp the defensive schemes. During the offseason those things are his responsiblity.
I think he will be given every opportunity to earn a spot. Clearly, Danny knows what the potential upside is. However, to date, Williams hasn't done that.
I think you are right when you say that he could be better than Stiesma. However, there have been alot of failed NBA players who were more talented than the ones that lasted in the league.
Talent gets you drafted. Discipline and hard work make you part of a team.
