I say wait until after March 22nd, then if he still wants a buyout, give him one, and good riddance, but he won't be able to be on anyone else's playoff roster if he signs after that date (I think that's the date).

If you do that, what incentive does he have to agree to any buy-out that saves the Celtics money?

That's a good question.  I know it's not generally how opinions are formed these days, but I'd like to hear JO's side of the story before I completely smear the guy.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

What does this say about Doc? Not only did he play JNO but insisted on starting him. What does this say to the young guys? Maybe Rondo is right about Doc concerning the sense of entitlement  he gives the veterans.

None, but I don't much care about his incentive.  He signed a contract (and should honor it) and has substantially underperformed his contract.  I don't want to help him at all if his goal is to ditch us to hitch his wagon to Miami.

It's not my money, but I'd not allow him to go that route.  Now, if Wyc, et al, see fit to buy him out and save a little cash that's their business.  Being a fan, on principle, I'd much rather make him honor his contract.  If he's capable of playing, why should he be allowed to bolt from us to Miami just because he feels like he can ride the coat tails of Wade, James, and Bosh to a ring?  It's dishonorable.  You sign a contract, you fulfill it, whether the team you signed the contract is favored to win the championship or is far from it.

  • It's not hard to work hard.
I'm not exaggerating, JO is my least favorite Celtic of all time.

And the really sad thing is, I don't blame him for this. He has been a jerk his whole career, he's been washed up for 4 years now. And Danny should have known it, considering he was god-awful in that Boston-Miami playoff series in 2010. But we gave him the full mid-level for 2 years?

Just for context, JO is making more money than Russell Westbrook this year. He's making more than Tyler Hansborough, Roy Hibbert, and Darren Collison combined. this was an extraordinarily dumb acquisition, regardless if he wants a buyout or not. Worthless player.

he has shown that he wants to win.

maybe physically he jus cant do it and bowing out gracefully

To me someone wanting to win should be a given, not something you get credit for. Lots of guys want to win, but they're not good enough to be in the league.

And like I said, I really don't blame JO for this. He's being the guy he is, and he's been washed up for years. This is the Celtics fault for signing him in the first place. They could've taken some other banged up old dude like Brad Miller and used the extra 2M on Tony Allen.
McHale's favorite ruse is putting paper in the mouths of sleeping teammates. "Try using one of these cocktail napkins," he said. "When just the edge sticks out of a guy's mouth, it looks like he's got fangs. The best part is when he wakes up."

i don't even believe this story but its true that Jo got the mle while we are letting Tony walk and not getting back up wings, point guards or for heavens sake, centers.

The Bass for Baby move was awesome. But the drafting the last few years has been awful or close to it

Huh? I'd say Bradley at 19 is turning out to be a pretty great pick, JJJ has shown some signs of being a good pick for the position, and I would say that Moore at 55 was a terrific value.

It was reported by Wojnarowski on Twitter:

Jermaine O'Neal has been angling for a contract buyout, but Celtics still trying to trade his expiring deal as part of package, sources say.

Quote
Adrian Wojnarowski ‏ @WojYahooNBA
O'Neal has strong interest in returning to Miami, sources say, but doubtful Boston executes buyout if Danny Ainge thinks that'll happen.

I just wonder who the sources are. Perhaps Wojnarowski is working on this story.

  • Winning with dignity = Celtics
JO is the basketball equivalent of Carl Pavano.  Took a decent amount of money, and then contributed exactly NOTHING except an ability to get second opinions from every doctor on the East Coast...what a shame.
If you don't understand, it's because you're not a Celtics fan - achieving the highest level and doing it with dignity is something not everyone has figured out!

That Orlando comeback alone showed Moore was worth it at pick 55

Well, I guess JO Ain't Done:

http://espn.go.com/blog/boston/celtics/post/_/id/4690948/oneal-swats-away-rumors-with-tweet

Swat away those rumors, JO - just like you swatted away shots when you manned the paint for us.

Get well, big guy. We need you.
