Does anyone know the rules on an off-season amnesty?

Could we presumable amnesty Pierce and then sign him for the Vet Minimum?
"All I have to know is, he's my coach, and I follow his lead. He didn't have to say anything in here this week. We all knew what we had to do. He's a big part of our family, and we're like his extended family. And we did what good families do when one of their own is affected." - Teddy Bruschi

And the time to amnesty players for this year is past so we can only amnesty him for next year which means the earliest we can resign him is for the 2013-14 season at which point it makes no sense to resign him.

I think its actually until the end of the original contract.  But I could be mistaken.

You know, you're probably right, but, I can not find any evidence of this anywhere.  In none of the articles regarding the amnesty process does it specifically preclude a waiving team from re-signing the waived player, just that the player will go through a "modified waiver process".

The process includes teams under the cap having first rights to sign the player through a "blind auction".  If the player is not signed, he therefore has cleared waivers and is free to sign with any team.

Ok, I did find one article that claims a team can not re-sign a waived player.  No supporting evidence was provided though.

Here's the official memo released by the NBA regarding the tentative terms of the new CBA (section 14 deals with the amnesty provision).

Player is off-limits to his original team for the full extent of his contract.

I think it's in one of these, but can't remember:

Nope.  Neither article says anything about it specifically.  They just detail the "auction process".

Like I said above, I'm pretty certain a team can not re-sign a player they amnesty, I just can't find any concrete evidence.

Anyone have a link with any such evidence?

Here it is (last bullet point):

http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/33976/what-we-know-about-the-amnesty-provision

While written before the full details of amnesty were released, I believe this is consistent with the letter of the provision.

Here's the direct quote

While this has also not been confirmed by the league, it is likely that teams will not be allowed to re-sign or re-acquire (for example, through a trade) their amnestied player for the length of his amnestied contract. For example, if the Magic, as expected, use their amnesty on Gilbert Arenas – with three years left on his contract – he can’t play for the Magic again for three seasons. This rule also existed in the 2005 amnesty provision.

Still not concrete though (see bolded part).  I guess I'm just surprised the league has not officially confirmed this.  It's probably true though, given it was this way in the last CBA.

TP for the effort though.

I am not sure why the league needs to confirm it.  They have released copies of the CBA to guys like Larry Coon, but Coon anyways is still in the process of combing through it.

I also believe Coon has confirmed via twitter that this is the case with this rule, and like I said, he has seen the actual CBA.

The league needs to confirm it because I say so.

It wouldn't matter anyways.  C's wouldn't do it and somebody would claim him if they did.

Here's CBA expert Larry Coon summarizing the details of the amnesty clause in a chat.

Quote
* A team can use amnesty one time and one time only.

* Amnesty is available before each season. If they used it in a prior season, they can’t use it again.

* Amnesty can only be used for players who were with the team on 12/9. If they sign a new contract or were traded, they can’t be amnestied.

* The team waives the player. They still have to pay his salary, but he comes off their cap and tax.

* The team that waives the player cannot re-sign or re-acquire the player for the length of his contract.

* Teams under the cap can claim the player before he clears waivers with a partial bid.

* The team with the highest partial bid gets to keep the player.

* The winning team has to pay the player’s salary according to their bid.

* The team that waives the player gets to reduce what they owe the player by the amount of the winning team’s bid.
