"He was signed to be a spark off the bench and provide scoring."
I just don't think that's who Jeff Green is. He is a skilled player but needs time to find the flow of the game.
Why didn't we sign Jamal Crawford if we wanted a scoring spark off the bench? Could've had him for the same contract for sure.
I think this only makes sense if as others were saying, Green does start a bunch of games, because Danny determined with the shortened season and crazy back to backs that you will need to sit out PP, Ray or KG for whole games, and you'll need Jeff Green to start those games.
Weird that we don't know his position or how he fits into the rotation at all and he's a $9 m player.
He's a $9 million player because he could probably start for 15 different teams in the NBA, but we need him on our bench. He is also being paid this much because Danny sees potential in letting him start next year, or at some point in the future for our club.
He gets 9 million because he is extremely versatile. You can't start him at power forward consistently, but you can have him releive Pierce, Allen and Garnett, and get 25-30 minutes out of him per game. The plan this year is to make sure our starts play way less minutes. So essentially, he'll get (almost) starter minutes, but won't start because we have 4 All Stars and he's just not quite big enough to play center.
Why should we get Jamal Crawford when we can get a younger, bigger, more athletic player who can guard the 4,3 and 2 spots and also play each of these position quite well?
Why didn't we sign Jamal Crawford ? Because he can't defend Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony in the playoffs like Green can. He can't play the post like Green can.
We have more options with Green.
Just because started in OKC doesn't mean he can't come off the bench. Lamar Odom is 6 feet 10 and better than Jeff Green, and he comes off the bench (well did for the Lakers). Similar situation where they have a very good starting line up and it helps them more to bring him in as an all rounder who can keep the scoring up while we rest our starters who have played as a starting 5 for all these years.
