Yes. Other than Larry Bird and Michael Jordan, the NBA has never had as fierce a competitor as Kobe. Just a fact.
Hitler was a fierce competitor.  I could maybe see myself rooting for him on the team but not Kobe and not Lebron. I've got standards.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I like how people are even debating this. Everybody here would be enormous Kobe fans if he was on this team, especially if he was drafted here. His annoying facial expressions and gestures would become iconic in Boston and he would go down as one of the Celtics greats.

If he was traded here today, it might take a couple (yes, only a couple) of games for people to warm up to the idea, but he would be embraced by most everyone, especially if he was excited to be here.

Seriously, who are we kidding people?!

If he admits that he is the biggest media creation of the decade and is overrated

Then maybe he could come off the bench and be a role player to shoot some threes...

I'd root for him, but I wouldn't be happy about it.

Everyone would love him.   People loved that punk Sheed and those who didn't only disliked him, because of his lack of production.  Kobe would be adored.  Our team is filled with a bunch of nationally unlikeable players.  Outside of Boston people hate KG and Pierce.  We'd hate them too if they weren't Celtics.  It goes both ways.

KG is actually a love/hate person. There are a lot of people who rooted for him first, before they became Celtics fans. He has a unique personality, and you probably have to "get" him before you can really love him. And if he is not on your team, you are not that inclined to find out, what he is all about.

I don't know about Kobe. I do believe he has some serious flaws as a person, and if he became a Celtic, I would have to look hard for reasons to like him. But I guess as a fan of the team, I would find some stories telling what a nice guy he really is. :D

I wonder how Kobe and KG would have co-existed if Garnett ended up in LaLa Land back in the summer of 2007?

Just like in general chemistry, sometimes certain mixures can cause explosions or harmful gaseous vapors (ie mixing bleach and ammonia), the same can be said in life, too...minus the physical explosions, of course.

Would KG have rubbed off on Kobe how he has done so in Boston?  Would it simply just not work?  Why or why not?

According to sources KG and Kobe are good friends when they arent playing each other in the finals.

And I would punch him in a box.
And I would punch him with a fox.
And I would punch him in his house.
And I would punch him with a mouse.

And on a train and in the rain.

Punchin Kobe till he's slain.

Would have worked just as good in LA for Garnett as it has in Boston.  Same with Allen.  They both deferred parts of their offensive game for team success.

KG had a chance to maybe force his way to the Lakers but soured on the idea due to the Kobe drama when Kobe demanded a trade to Chicago.

Of course KG didn't want to force a trade anywhere really, as evidenced when he initially refused to sign an extension with Boston.
