Carmelo is good. But I don't think he's as good as people make him out to be. It's not "THE MAN" kind of player to me. I don't see him being the number one guy on a team and taking them to the promised land.

I'd rather keep our old guys and work on younger people in a year or so.

And what was the last young team to really win it all anyway?

I agree, in many ways I see him as the next Paul Pierce, no one thought he was "the man" either, and until he really got the supporting cast, he wasn't

Of course I would ... Melo is better player than Pierce. Nevermind younger.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I would be quite sad to see Pierce go [obviously], but I don't even really see this as debatable. Carmelo has at least as much to offer this season (fitting in with the team is the only possible issue) and that gap is only going to increase as the years go by.

But, don't worry - Carmelo doesn't have any desire to come to Boston and we have nothing to offer Denver - it would have to be a three-way deal.

I think Carmelo's defense is also a pretty big issue.  As of right now, Carmelo doesn't play any.  Since our defense against elite teams like Miami relies so much on team defense, I think this trade would probably result in us not making the Finals this year.

Also, Carmelo has played selfish basketball this year.  I'm not sure if he'd have time to adjust to our system, where no player is more important than the other stars on the team.

Is it worth lengthening our window, if it lessens our chances this year?  When you're this close to a title, you need to maximize your chances, not focus on the future.

Exactly my thoughts, teams work for years, even decades to get the right team that can win a title, no point breaking it up and ending that chance unless you absolutely have to because your team has proven they cant win one. (i.e. orland magic trade)

Pretty funny that everything you just wrote could have been said about Pierce pre-big3.  If some team were considering trading for Pierce back then, their fans would have written the same reasons for not wanting Pierce.  Ironic!

I've seen Carmelo play good defense, just not consistently.  Can and "isn't" are very different things.

I love our players too, but clearly you have heavily tinted green goggles on.

I was going to say the same exact thing about Pierce in 2007.  Beat me to it.

Love Carmelo, but Pierce is and should always be a Celtic. There is no trading him.

You expect Carmelo to show a new commitment to defense that he's never shown in his entire career, plus master the team's defensive sets, plus learn to share the ball with his teammates, in a period of 28 games?

Accuse me all you want of "green goggles", but chemistry and fit are every bit as important in this league as talent are.  Give me Carmelo in 2013.  For 2011, Paul gives us a significantly better shot at winning.

I'd rather move Allen and I believe Denver would rather have Allen anyway.

No.
I think Melo is overrated.*  I think the offers from the Knicks and the Nets are both already overpaying for him.  If I'm Denver I pull the trigger quick on one of these and pop the champagne.

*He's good, don't get me wrong, but I don't think he's bet the franchise good (as was the case with KG, for example).
Celtics fan for life.

Mike D'Antoni's system fits Melo.
