I really don't like the term "bone on bone"... it's like the sound of nails on a chalkboard.

Couldn't agree more. But it sounds like that's exactly what's happening. How else do you want it described?

I do like "a bo-bo condition".  :D

Completely predictable.."Injured" most of this season..(Except I thought we might get 40-45 games this season.

He'll make a miraculous recovery in his contract year next year.  70 games next season.

If that knee is really a bone-on-bone situation, he is not going to ever recover.

And as far as Brandon Roy goes, his career might be over.

As for Dampier, I guess bone-on-bone explains why he might be the worst center in the NBA.

As for not being in shape, here's what Danny said:

Quote
“I think when you’re out with a bad knee, it’s tough to condition basketball wise,” Ainge said. “I mean, he was on the treadmill, the non-weight bearing treadmill, the swimming pool, a lot of things like that.

In other words, JO wasn't sitting around eating twinkies.  He was working, but it's pretty hard to get into NBA shape when your body is broken down.  Also, people have these grand ideas regarding the rehab plan JO should have been following, but where was the Celtics training / medical staff during this time?  Why is it JO that has to come up with a strengthening regimen, rather than having the plan come from the team?  Recently, our track record with guys coming back from injuries -- Big Al, Pierce, Delonte, Wally, possibly KG, etc., etc. -- has been less than stellar, so I wouldn't be so quick to put the sole blame on JO.

Roy, he might be working out now, but he came into camp out of shape and that's why his knee started swelling.  Danny said as much at the press conference.  Even Gary Washburn noticed:

Quote

Danny Ainge kept alluding to Jermaine O'Neal being not in top shape and carrying extra weight as reason for knee discomfort

from: twitter.com/gwashburn14

Taking care of your body extends beyond 'working out'--it's about eating right, getting proper rest, and maintaining flexibility while gaining strength.  So, yeah, maybe he couldn't work out, his knee is swollen--but that means he better start eating less and working with the rest his body in the meantime.  The Cs trainers can only do so much, they can't put the right food in his mouth and make him chew it.  And they don't come to his house over the summer and make him not sit on his couch all day.

Say what you will about TA, but he took his body and his rehab seriously.  The man was not only always in shape, he was RIPPED.  He had commitment to the game and that's why he came back from an injury far more devastating than anything JO's had to face.  KG, too, has maximum commitment to his craft and keeps himself in tiptop condition.  Those men returned from injury because of that commitment.  Jermaine O'Neal's commitment is questionable at best.
Folly. Persist.

The whole thing is kinda puzzling. I'll trust them that a "minor procedure to clean out" the knee is less beneficial than more rest.

I believe the last time he basically did nothing but rest. This time they are strengthening the muscles around it. Maybe that, coupled with a prolonged absence from the court, will bring better results. Maybe we brought him back prematurely.

I say shut him down longer than four weeks. Let's do something like 6 weeks, then 3 of rehab. How about a return on March 23rd at home vs the Grizz? That's 9 weeks from their decision and over 10 since his last game. That'll also give him nearly 4 weeks to get ready for the playoffs.

He has said he was going to strengthen the muscles around it like three times since the preseason.  Maybe he was just running his mouth.

Bottom line is we desparately needed a big because Perk went down.  The options were very slim (would you rather have signed Eric Dampier?).  JO played 70 games last year so we took a gamble his worst injury days were behind him.  So far our gamble hasn't quite paid off, but when JO has played he's done well on the defensive end and his offensive has been a little rusty at times which was to be expected.

Rather than blame Danny or JO, I'm cheering for the guy to get healthy.  He's not a make it or break it guy for us as far as the title is concerned, but having him healthy would be HUGE for us assuming both Perk and Shaq are healthy as well.

Yeah I'm sure people predicted he wouldn't pan out and now they think they are geniuses.  But those type of people just run their mouths on every possible topic so some of their comments are bound to be right.  Just like the people who said Shaq is too old.  I haven't heard any comments about that in months.  But if he gets an injury they'll all be coming out of the woodwork.
