I wonder what this will do to his market value in free agency this summer.

It looks more and more likely that Howard will available for an MLE type deal.
I think he signs a Posey style deal.

Far less money than he'd get hoping to have a healthy year and get a new contract. Otherwise he's looking at a less than MLE type deal for what 3+ years?

I would have to agree. He might not even get MLE considering he wont be completely healthy until this time next year. Look how long it has taken Big Al to round into form. This is on top of an already abysmal year for him and he should be available for cheap. He will be 30 next year so who is going to pay this guy? Let's get him for a year on a Daniels type deal.

Quick stupid question for a TP. Can he be bought out if his final year is a team option? I'm guessing no but I cant find the answer anywhere. thanks!

You mean, buy him out this season? There's no incentive for Howard to agree to a buyout.

Before the start of next season, Washington can simply cut him, and not owe him a cent. So no incentive for a buyout there, either.

Will there be a window where they can take back his salary in contracts and then the team that trades for him can decline his option?

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think there is a window, between the end of the regular season and July 1, when the new fiscal year starts and there is a moratorium on player movement.

Draft night, for instance.

I should have been more clear. In this case there is no incentive on either side. I am talking to a hypothetical with a healthy player. Sorry. Is it a legal move?

I wonder if the wizards will end up with John Wall. That team can't be winning many games the rest of the season. Plus I have a feeling the nets will not win the lottery. The league is unfair like htat. Tim Duncan. Kevin Durant.

I think so. As long as there is incentive on both sides, I think any player could be bought out.

The team option, for all intents and purposes, means that the player is on an expiring contract.

That is best chance at one last large payday. A $10 million per year type contract.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
It serves them right. We would have Caron if they didn't make that silly trade for Howard. It's not like they were going to pick up Howard's option anyway, so it essentially is an expiring contract (and sort of like a buy-out)...oh well, management probably isn't all that upset about this. I hope he gets better and is ready for next year.

That's what I was thinking too. TP paid.
