I voted other because I think it very well could be a little of all of the above
I agree with Jeff here. With both sides seemingly so far apart i expect Rondo's agent to secure a large deal with one of the leagues lottery (or close to lottery) teams that have cap space which is wayyyyy more than Ainge values Rondo's role on this team.......or the agent arranging a sign-n-trade to make a deal work.
If this occurs be prepared for A LOT of negative stories about Rondo "leaking" out in the immediate days and weeks following that deal. Methinks this won't be a harmonious separation.
Why would it have to be a lottery team? Cleveland and Miami will have cap space.
I also said "close to lottery" which most certainly would include the Heat. Cleveland already had a better fit to partner with LeBron in Mo Williams so that won't happen. The teams to offer Rondo the best contracts are those who are going to rely on him increasing his scoring output and putting the ball in his hands. It makes zero sense for a team that has LeBron or Wade to pay Rondo $10m per year to play the same role he is in for the Celtics as you can get 12/8 from 20 other PGs in the league.
Considering only 6 players in the game averaged 8 assists per game I don't think there are "20" other PGs who can provide that.
Right because they all had Paul Pierce and Ray Allen curling off screens.
How many assists have any of the other point guards who've gotten minutes in the new Big 3 era gotten?
Not nearly as many as Rondo. Also he gets a ton of other teammates open looks beyond those two.
Sure, however when guys like Chris Duhon or Raymond Felton are 1-1.5 assists per game behind Rondo while setting up the Knicks and Bobcats "scorers" i think its pretty safe to say they would make up that assist and then some had they had sets run for Pierce and Allen over guys like Boris Diaw, Raja Bell, Al Harrington, etc.
There are many other PGs who would thrive in Rondo's role if they didn't have to shoulder the burder of putting points up for their inept offenses as well or had better scorers to set up.
Take a pg from the Knicks and put him on a team with players like PP and KG who make the extra pass instead of settling for the first shot available and the pg will get fewer assists, not more.
All the more reason we don't need to invest in the PG position if he plays that small a role in us scoring the ball then. Of course i disagree with your post since our sets are run for Pierce, Garnett and Ray Allen to get quality shots....not to make extra passes. Last season Pierce avg. 3.5 apg, his lowest in 7 seasons while Garnett avg. 2.5 apg.....his lowest since his rookie season. Our sets are designed for our scorers to score the ball which inflates our PG's assist number since we have better scorers than nearly every team in the league.....certainly more than the Knicks.
