Didn't Vollmer start in place of Light and do a good job?

If we are going to talk about 2nd rounders, do we include the fact that in '07 BB traded one (or two) for Wes Welker?

Edit: Nick, you beat me to it.

Sort of. If you want to say we drafted Wes W and Randy Moss with 2nd and 4th round picks then you have to also say we wasted picks on other guys like Burgess or Andrew Walter.

Nope.  I was responding to your statement about "top draft picks", so I purposely first focused on only 1st round picks.  Then you brought up questionable 2nd and 3rd rounders, so I brought up Welker (I didn't bring up Moss as he was gotten with a 4th rounder).  Pats traded a 7th rounder for Burgess, I believe, and if we want to talk about all draft picks, then fine, but clearly a 7th rounder is not a top pick.

I think any way you cut it, the Pats have done pretty well with their draft picks (which include trades), except for the year they drafted Maroney and Chad Jackson.

Wheatley in the 2nd round last year is barely on the team

Who would you have taken instead of Wheatley at the 67th pick (or whatever it was)?

PS -- not trying to pick on you playa!  just conversing...

Well I guess that's Monday Morning Quarterbacking. I'm not saying I would have had the forsight to take Steve Slaton who was available till the 89th pick or RB Kevin Smith taken 2 picks later than Wheatley. I probably wouldn't have liked that cause they had just used a 1rst on Maroney the year before.  But maybe Dan Connor (LB from PSU)

The player picked right after him was DB Terell Thomas of USC who went to the Giants. The next two DBs taken in the third round were out of LSU and Oklahoma. Justin King of PSu was available but I think he was hurt in his rookie year

The only excuse I can come up with is that I think he played in a 4-3 instead of 3-4, but whoopdie doo. They play a good handful of that now

Dan Connor is listed at 6'2" 231lbs.  The Pats hate to play any linebacker less than 250lbs.  It has always been BB's thing, he loves big linebackers.

Don't have any stats to back this up, but the Pats seem to do a better job than most teams at picking up undrafted rookies and giving them a chance.  Think you've got to include all rookies, not just the guys actually drafted, in this analysis.  There was a good article I was reading yesterday about Gary Guyton and LawFirm being two from last year.  Had we drafted them in the sixth or seventh round instead of just extending them an invite to camp, would that make the impressions of the draft better?

Gotta say one thing, when BB does miss on a draft pick, they don't stick around very long (where are thou, Chad Jackson?).
