"wow, cant believe people are relishing and making jokes about the possibility of someone having swine flu, knowing the seriousness of it.  very tasteless, immature, and overall makes u look like jerks."

im sorry but swine flu is not as serious as you think it is.  I am from toronto and there is NOTHING about it on the news even though canada has had more cases than the US.  We have gotten our vaccines and we have an absolutely amazing health care system to keep us from worrying, but the reality is that there is very little to worry about.  Right now it is weaker than the average flu.  Furthermore, the virus only stays alive on surfaces for 5 minutes, wehre as some common flu's can stay active for days.  I had a very mild case of it and barely even missed school.  I turn on CNN and there is CODE RED warnings and on fox news glen beck is crying telling people this pandemic is going to end the world.  Everyone relax, lebron will be fine.

with all that said i feel totally fine laughing at lebron, maybe he will vomit up that giant ego of his.  this is hillarious and i hope it is true as long as he is fully healthy for the season opener (i want to beat them without any lebron fans lame excuses)

Lol yeah.  Swine Flu is kinda a joke.  It's the flu, people.  Come on.  I know a ton of people who have had it already.  I'm pretty sure I had it too.  I think a couple of my coworkers have it.  Just like any other flu.  Unless you're an infant or a old person near death, you dont' have much to worry about.  But that's the flu for you...

Michael Jordan use to play with the flu all the time.  Big deal.

Actually it's a much stronger and more highly resistant form of the flu than the mutlitude of strains that exist, (and that's the reason there has been so much hype over it). The CDC doesn't use such strong statements unless there is real reason for concern ... trust me when I say they do everything possible to avoid making any kind of announcement that even borders on "alert" or pandemic status.

Come on, people need to get over themselves.  Making jokes about LEBRON JAMES getting the flu is perfectly acceptable since we know he's going to be fine.  Most of the people that have passed away from this flu were usually weaker than most people, having another infection or being at a vulnerable stage in their health, such as pregnant women.  Lebron James is at an ultimate health fitness level, being physically active and not having any major illness.  I think he'll be fine in a couple of days.

Again, just be careful. There's really know telling who the flu will affect the most. The flu of 1918 (an H1N1 strain) killed 50-100 million people. The primary victims were the healthiest and most fit members of society, because this particular strain exploited your body's own immune system: stronger immune system, stronger effect. I don't think that's a characteristic of this current H1N1, but really anyone can die from any flu depending basically on your luck.

Scientists have used tissue samples from frozen victims to reproduce the virus for study. Given the strain's extreme virulence there has been controversy regarding the wisdom of such research. Among the conclusions of this research is that the virus kills via a cytokine storm (overreaction of the body's immune system) which explains its unusually severe nature and the concentrated age profile of its victims. The strong immune systems of young adults ravaged the body, whereas the weaker immune systems of children and middle-aged adults caused fewer deaths.[9]

I think medicine has advanced a bit since 1918.

You connecting the swine flu with one of the most deadliest epidemic of our known history.  I think that is a stretch to say that it could happen to anyone.  I can see that, and I was one of the people that were somewhat worried about Swine Flu in the beginning, but if you look at the most deadliest cases of Swine Flu, you'll see that most of the deaths occurred to older people, kids, pregnant women and young adults with a secondary immune defeciency (such as asthma, respiratory inflammation, diabetes).  I think from an observational stand point, you can't see any relation from this with the 1918 virus.  What should concern researchers are the strainds of this virus.  Basically, doctors and researchers should continually keep this virus under watch, but to say that anyone could die from it (especially Lebron James, who I am sure has some of the best doctors for this) is a bit of a stretch at this point.  That is why the vaccine is first being send out to children and pregnant women, as well as doctors and nurses (who should stop their whining and just take the darn shot).

as i said earlier in the thread.....lebron is a father to a young child.  if you think its funny or not a big deal he has h1n1, then you are insensitive and heartless.  would it not be a big deal if his child catches it?!  like i said b4, there are bigger things than bball.  so continue to make light of it, crack jokes, and minimize the big picture....it will just make u look like a jerk.

LeBron and the swine flu have one thing in common....OVERRATED
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."

Im sorry but you clearly have no idea what your talking about.  Im a Med student starting residency this year so i have done my research.  Furthermore i live in Canada and there has been absolutely no panic.  W are being precautious and the vaccine is available to the public but it is certainly not that big a deal.  You have all just been scared by alerts named after arbitrary colors and doofuses like glen beck crying ing panicing.  You are right in the statement that it has the POTENTIAL to become stronger than an average flu but right now it is much weaker.  Furthermore, flu's like the spanish flu and extreme cases of the average flu cause hyperimune disfunctions and it is your body that does damage to itself through high fevers, unnecessary vomitting and diareaha that cause dehydration etc and this is why it has the potential to kill young, healthy people.  H1N1 does not do this, and the only real threat is resperatory infections which effect the very young, very old, and very sick.  There is little to no threat right now, and you would see that if you watched canadian news.  Please stop panicing people.  Panic and stress GREATLY lowers your imune system and if anything it is more of a threat than swine flu.

No one here is "panicking" anybody, merely stating the FACT that this is a virulent strain of the flu virus, which has been unresponsive to vaccine, and, if taken for granted, can kill people, directly or indirectly. Maybe you have a "Fountain of Youth" up there in Canada, or are just plain immune to disease, but here in the U.S., about 36,000 people each year die from flu and related causes, and H1N1 is no less of a threat, (I'm sure you know that if you're a med student). To say any type of flu is "no big deal" is just plain naive'  ... anything that kills that many people is a very serious concern. By the way, I really don't like throwing these things around, but I'm a surgeon and have been a physician for over 25 years.

I agree that anything that kills that many people yearly is a BIG deal, but currently h1n1 doesnt seem to be any bigger of a deal than a normal flu.  And by no means are we immune, there have been almost the exact same number of cases as there have been in the states, and we have a fraction of your population.  With that said, the numbers and rate of fatality are still pretty consistent with normal flu strands during this season.  But none of this matters because this is a BASKETBALL FORUM.  i just wanted to say that by no means was I preaching any sort of superiority or anti american sentiments.  My dad grew up in boston and i spend every summer there,  and i did not mean my comments in a negative way.  But it is a fact that h1n1 has been blown out of proportion by american news (probably in an attempt to raise awareness and protect people).

I gotcha (TP) ... and I understand where you're coming from. I wasn't trying to scare people or say there is an epidemic, ( there isn't ... yet, and I pray it stays that way). What I was saying is that the flu is very often taken as "no big deal" and that is why it kills so many people each year, because they don't take it seriously. Is this strain killing more than the usual? Not right now, but what is alerting the CDC is that H1N1 is so far not responding well to innoculation, and that reason alone is enough for above average interest and awareness. In the past they have been slow on the up-take, and they're trying to get ahead of the curve on this thing, instead of playing catch-up, at which point a virus can be beyond a viable vaccine.

Big deal.

as i said earlier in the thread.....lebron is a father to a young child.  if you think its funny or not a big deal he has h1n1, then you are insensitive and heartless.  would it not be a big deal if his child catches it?!  like i said b4, there are bigger things than bball.  so continue to make light of it, crack jokes, and minimize the big picture....it will just make u look like a jerk.

Wow. I can't think of anything more idiotic to get up on your soap box about. really?? people making slight jokes about Lebron having the flu has you calling them "tasteless, immature, jerks"?? I'd hate to see your reaction to a "yo mamma" joke. No one even said anything that bad, but you jumped up on your white stallion anyway.

Clearly, the American media over-hypes EVERYTHING, I'm not downplaying the severity of someone's sickness, but this is the flu for christ sake, the same flu we've all be getting our whole lives. Yes, people die from the flu, people die from a lot of things ...

Of course I want Lebron to recover, of course I don't want his kid to get sick or contract the flu, and no I don't see the humor in any of the jokes, and quite frankly can't come up with any flu/lebron related jokes (though the not shaking hands at the end of the game was brilliant), but just because you don't think it's funny doesn't mean you should start insulting people.
