I don't have much to add to the advice given celticsclay.  I used to have my troubles with insomnia, but I think it was due as much with irregular sleep patterns as anything.  Having kids who get up early has simply made me tired enough to go sleep at "normal" hours now, but I still find myself about once a week needing to stay up unreasonably late to fill some latent need to be sleep deprived (which is weird).

I hope you figure something out, and I'm truly sorry for all your recent heartache.  Glad that CB's here for you.  Good luck.

guys,

I appreciate so much the support I have received here. Celtics Blog is truly a community. I will take this suggestions I have recieved, with a special shoutout to the private messages, and see what I can do. I could not state how much it means to me to have advice from celtics supporters that don't know me. Its been tough, and you guys have been truly phenomal. You have helped someone in a way that transcends sports. Thank you for that.

Clearly you have a ton of emotional issues going on here.  I'm not a psychiatrist so I'm not even going to begin to go down the road of emotional advice.  I can only offer what has worked for me: exercise.  You might not think it, but try hitting the gym.  Go out for a long run.  Play some hoops.  Go hiking.  Run a 5k in memory of your mom.  Get out there, get active and you'll see how tired you'll get and how your clear your mind can get.

I know when I've had a lot of things on my mind, going out for a solid 10-15 miler (not saying you should do this unless you're already in good shape) has helped me a lot.  Plus, by the time 10pm rolls around, my head hits the pillow and I'm OUT.

Hope you can get better.  Give it a shot though.

Great advice.  Exercise, and diet have shown to have a big effect on sleep.

Ultimately though, after reading what you are dealing with, I think the only thing that is really going to help is by going to a psychologist or psychiatrist to try to work out some of the issues that have been keeping you awake at night.

exercise is one of the few things that keeps me from sleeping - if I go too hard it takes hours for my body to calm down and my mind to relax...

how about a warm bath? that helps me...

but the big thing with insomnia and the reason it is so tough to break without professional help is that if you're aware of it, it makes it that much harder to get over.  Once your mind starts thinking I need to sleep, you won't. You need to find ways to clear your mind; yoga/meditation could help.  I would see a sleep specialist, or at least a psychologist. Most health insurance covers it too and you can always refuse medication - say it up front.

Hey guys,

I am battling extreme insominia lately. I am hoping to avoid the pharmaceutical route. Any suggestions?

You may have to go for sleep apnea study but that doesn't seem like your problem

Yahoo had a feature on foods that help you fall asleep and ironically warm milk makes it worse

I only remember fat free popcorn or something
and a glass of wine.

Working out so you get done 3 hours or more but 5 hours or less before bed supposedly really helps you sleep.

Again, I only base my advice on what works in my own experience.  I'm up everyday around 4am, workout from 5-7:15ish.  By the time 10pm rolls around, I'm toast and sleep through the night.
