I wasn't at the game and didn't hear the "USA" chant, which I agree is kind of stupid.

My "cave man" comment has absolutely no nationalistic bias. It is derived solely from the fact that Zaza Pachulia looks exactly like a cave man, a fact that I would gleefully make fun of even if he were an American and not from the former USSR.

i actually missed your comment on my oirginal pass and my "Stone Ages" was actually total coincidence and not directed at your post.

Zaza is an odd looking bird, but it just bothers me when so many people collectively think it is okay to taunt a guy simply because he is from another country. especially when we already have so many celebrated foreign players in-town, and we are you know a nation of immigrants for gosh sakes....it's just so backwards to me.

and the team is called the Boston CELTICS.....how American is that?

Fair enough. I actually agree with you whole-heartedly about the classlessness of making fun of someone just because they are a "foreigner". Unless you're a Native American, we are all to some degrees "foreigners" as well, so I just wanted to clarify.

That said, I'm nominating a new nickname for Mr. Pachulia:

Unfrozen Caveman Center

Not that it mattered at all, and I didn't even notice it until I saw a replay, but why did Pachulia take free throws for that foul?  Aren't illegal screens considered offensive fouls?  Was it because it happened in the back court?

This just put to rest all the "KG is all talk and got "punked" by Za Za" talk.  That's how you let a no-name player understand his role in the league.  Having said that I totally respect the Hawks for not backing down, but "Goodnight Zaza" was a classic.

the USA chant was really screwed up. very uncool and classless. as for classy, everybody on the c's was very respectful to the hawks after the game, even to zaza. they played their asses off (both the hawks, and the refs in atlanta), and i thought the way the celtics acted after the game spoke volumes about the team.

I love how KG gave no ground on that hit.  They say he leaned in.  More like he braced for impact and didn't give an inch.  God forbid a player stands his ground instead of flying 15 feet after contact.

I agree completely, I was there and very close to the play, and bracing himself is exactly what KG did.  He may have thrown a little extra shoulder action in there, but if he didn't do what he did, he would have been bowled over and possibly injured himself with a brute like Zaza slamming into him.  Once again, the refs totally bought into a 7 ft nearly 300 lb guy falling back as if he was hit by a missile, not a slender guy like KG, just like the phantom hit in Atlanta where Zaza fell back 10 ft. when in reality, there was no contact whatsoever when KG swung his arm to get Zaza off of him.  For whatever reason, the flopping is a more common practice by international players, I find it puzzling that the refs would continually fall for these phantom flops, especially by guys who it would take a Mack truck to knock them off their feet.  It makes me think back to Vlade and how he would try it against Shaq, but it mostly never worked.  I have a feeling if that same matchup were to happen now, that Vlade would get far more calls than he did based on how often I see refs make calls based on a players' reaction, not what actually happened.  They review Flagrant fouls, it has gotten to the point where maybe they should review flops too, the ones where there is a discernible space between the 2 players, yet the defender falls back as if shot by a gun, should clearly be overturned.

It only goes to support what I have been saying for awhile, namely, that NBA refs are guessing the majority of the time, they don't really see what is happening.  I mean, does any other profession have so many over the age of 65 trying to perform a duty that takes lightning quick reactions?  Watching Bavetta and his pathetic performance against Barkley should have made it clear that he is well past his prime.  All the announcers ever do is cite how awesome a guy is by the # of years served, never do they even raise the possibility that all those years mean they are so old, their reactions are clearly slowed, just like anyone else their age in the general population.  The NBA has some of the fastest, most athletic humans running and jumping all over the place, but they have a bunch of Seniors trying to be the ones determining who hit whom and how hard.  Ridiculous.

I think everyone needs to chill a bit on the supposed USA chant.  As I said, I was there, didn't really hear it, and it didn't last very long.  Fans will find anything to get under a guy's skin, it is all in good fun and part of the heckling fans do, it is relatively harmless and not mean-spirited in nature.  It is not even close to the Canadien fans booing and whistling throughout the entire singing of the Star Spangled Banner, that is what I would call totally classless.

Mike Breen just continues to not understand his job. His job is to call the action as he sees it. THe color commentator then comments on in and gives his opinion. With two color guys in the booth, the play by play man should be giving his opinion less and less. Towards the end of the video, Breen goes on about what if Pachulia throws a punch and Garnett reacts and thros back which would end in suspension.

Why would Breen even go there? There was no pushing or shoving. Nothing came close to escalating.
I have never been able to stand Breen, always siding with the refs, wants to be the play by play and color man.

I was at the game and I dont remember hearing any USA chants.  There were some guys trying to start a "Za Za Za, Za Za Za, hey hey hey, goodbye".  I thought that was pretty funny.

haha, you can tell after the hit garnett looked surprised. Didn't know whether to keep running or stop and just take the foul.

I checked the play-by-play because I thought I remembered the same thing happening.  What happened was that turned the ball over to the Hawks and then Perk fouled Zaza on the inbound.  That put him on the line.  I think ABC might've still been showing KG walking off getting his reception and didn't even show the inbound, it happened so fast.
"Take this down," said O'Neal. "My name is Shaquille O'Neal and Paul Pierce is the (expletive) truth. Quote me on that and don't take nothing out. I knew he could play, but I didn't know he could play like this. Paul Pierce is the truth."
