This GM Poll was mentioned in another thread, I thought I would tag it in this thread and make a few comments to get the discussion started:
https://www.nba.com/news/2024-25-nba-gm-surveyThe first thing that caught my eye is they have Mazzulla as 3rd best motivator, 2nd best offensive scheme, and 4th best defensive scheme, but no votes for best overall coach. Not sure how that works but he is tied or higher than Popovich in every category. Who woulda thought.
For Tatum, 14 GMs had him as the best SF in the league and he also got 1 vote as the best PF, tied with Anthony Davis and Sabonis, all star PFs. So Tatum is first team all NBA at SF and an all star at PF, that is pretty versatile. People come at me when I say that I prefer Tatum at SF, that he would be better individually as a SF than a PF. The GMs seem to agree with me. Part of why I like Tatum so much, not a peep of complaint, whatever the team needs. But he is playing his second best position (for at least half the game) because that is what is best for the team.
Several players got votes at multiple positions, Curry (PG/SG), Shai (PG/SG), Durant (SF/PF), but only Luka got votes at 3 positions (PG-#1, SG, SF). In terms of versatility, Luka probably wins, the best PG and votes at 2 other positions, but Tatum, best SF and versatile enough to get a vote at PF is great. I think Tatum's versatility and how valuable that versatility is to the team is undervalued in the MVP voting.
