Phoenix just witnessed 2 consecutive seasons where they couldn’t get over the hump and had two pretty big failures and are cap strapped which may see them lose their #1 pick (Ayton) to free agency.

He would be the perfect floor general for this team.

How much do you want to trust this team's future to CP3 being healthy when you need him to be?

With his cap figure, it's not like you can build a team around him that can survive with a beaten up CP3.

If you define future as the next 2 years then I’d be willing to trust him implicitly. Obviously age and health are a risk but imagine this team with him?

I’ve just always wanted him after Danny missed on him…

CP3 became a defensive liability in the later rounds of the playoffs. The Celtics identity is being elite defensively and switchable. He would compromise what the team does best.

At some point you have to blame the performance on the court on the players on the court. Every loss is not the coach's fault and every win isn't because of the players.

Paul is a 58-year-old diva who just ran out of gas in the 1st round of the playoffs.  I'd rather Jose Alvarado.

If the trade is something like Smart, Theis, Nesmith and a 1st, I'd do that. As extra financial incentive, I'd absorb Crowder (or Sakic if I had to) into the Thompson TPE.

So

Starters - Paul, Brown, Tatum, Horford, Rob
Rotation - Pritchard, White, Crowder, Grant

That team is closer to a title and pretty close to on par with the Bucks.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

No they are not, since they’d be worse defensively. Paul really broke down in the playoffs and Dallas abused him.

I don't think so, not at what he's going to cost. Also Brad had this to say:

Quote
“I think we need a little bit more playmaking. Yeah, I think that’s real,” said Stevens Tuesday. “There is no question that in this league the more guys that can make a play offensively, the better.

“I think the challenge again is whatever you do around the margins of our roster — we have a unique identity, and we have a uniqueness in our size and our ability to be versatile all across the board. We have to take all of that into account when we’re adding to our team. If we can maintain that and add some playmaking, without a doubt you want to do that.”

Given how CP3 was abused by Dallas, he's not the defender he was, so our versatility would take a hit.

but a lot better offensively and it is the offense that failed Boston

Plus Paul broke down defensively on a team of terrible defenders where he had a disproportionate defensive load.

I like Chris Paul but not at that contract and not at this point in his career.  And I think people are trying to hard to find a floor general.  I don't think that is the a problem.  If you want to upgrade the PG position, fine, upgrades are always good.  I think Smart is a very good player personally but there are better players in the league.  Maybe Chris Paul is better but he makes about $14M more.

Seems like a short term fix of a non-problem to me.  I guess if they would do Smart and Theis for Paul, you consider it.  Makes us better I guess for a couple of years.

Exactly, I don't see how Boston could really turn down Smart, Theis, Nesmith, and a 1st for Paul.  In addition to the upgrade on the court (at least for a season or two), Paul is incredibly popular around the league and would be a big time draw for those ring chasing vets.  The C's would just be on a whole different level in national interest as well.  If we could add Crowder or Saric (if the medicals check out) into the Thompson TPE, that would be huge as well (Crowder fits until the season change over so that would need to be finalized before the new season).

I don't think the Suns are going to trade Paul, but Smart is the type of player that would make sense with Booker and it would free up some money for them to retain Ayton (while keeping Booker and Bridges).
