Nesmith projects to be that kind of player, but isn't there yet.
I agree, which is why I assume you are talking about an in-season trade, so we can see what Nesmith looks like.  The kid is going to get shots in likely single coverage with Tatum/Brown on the floor.  If he excels, there's no need for Hield.

That's a good point. Perhaps we need a bit more patience. It seems like we've been preaching that for years, but it may be better to wait and trust CBS development.

Nesmith projects to be a more switchy and reliable defender too.

I’m still a fan of Hield. I think a change of scenery will do him well.

But we might as well see what we have in Nesmith first. He may be every bit the shooter Hield is, a more complimentary piece to Tatum/Brown, and a better defender.

I think you guys are going to be really disappointed if you think Nesmith is going to be Huelva, especially right out of the gate
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Bigs - Shaquille O'Neal, Victor Wembanyama
Wings -  Lebron James
Guards - Luka Doncic

I think Nesmith projecting as similar to rookie Hield isn’t too wild, but that said Hield started at 24.

He also started 55 games that season and played 23 mpg.  Much easier to get into a shooting stroke when you have a consistent role and consistent minutes.  And he shot 39% on 4.6 attempts.  I just don't think any of that is realistic for Nesmith and that was from rookie Hield.  The way some people are talking they think Nesmith is going to produce like 5th year Buddy Hield.

To be clear, I don't think he will be as good as Hield this year.

But if he can be a shooter like Luke Kennard in his 1st and 2nd season or Landry Shamet since he came into the league, that's like 70% of what Hield offers with the potential of eventually being comparable. Depending on his effectiveness and size of role, he might be good enough this year that it doesn't make sense to trade for Hield. That's all I was trying to say (and all I think the other posters were saying).

What I'd be looking for is effectiveness as a shooter and overall team offense when he plays. That would possibly indicate that the threat of his shooting is helping the team offensively. I also want to see how he plays defensively. I don't think it would be a stretch for him to be a better defender than Hield by the end of his first year. I think you could argue Langford was a better defender than Hield last season. CBS does a good job helping his guys be confident and consistent team defenders.
