This seems to be the company line regarding Kyrie. I think the Cs hve gone out of their way to not trash the guy or blame him for their issues last year. First it was Ainge. Then Stevens. Then Smart. Now JB.

What Brown said was basically fairly accurate. The pieces didn’t fit. The “guys who didn’t want to take a step back” was probably referring to Rozier/Mook (and himself as well even though out of everyone, he seemed like the only one to accept/adjust his role).

I could see Ainge or Stevens telling the players to just blame them and then get on to playing basketball and let them deal with it as a way for the players to avoid the distraction and focus on the important part of their jobs, playing basketball.  The flip side of that is once you give an answer like that the media sharks will smell blood so I can't necessarily say I think that happened.

This guy at CBS Sports articulates why it was dumb for Jaylen to say this:

https://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/jaylen-brown-defends-kyrie-irving-for-celtics-woes-last-season-instead-throws-shade-at-coaches-front-office/

What a dumb take.   Botkin clearly is jumping on the 'hot take' without really paying attention to what Jaylen actually said.

Botkin writes: " In fact, he's calling himself out without even realizing it."

Brown most certainly does realize it.   Go watch JB's "All the Smoke" interview (you can find it on YouTube).  Jaylen Brown chooses every word very carefully and is not afraid to dis himself.

Jaylen's purpose in this is very clearly to parse out blame to go all around using only the blame each party has already accepted.  He doesn't throw any blame onto anyone that they haven't already publicly owned.  And while it may seem like he's letting Kyrie off the hook he also is indirectly putting a spotlight on Kyrie's inability to lead or work with all those others.   But he's doing so without directly criticizing anyone.  Brown is a player's association officer now and this is how he has to talk.

What jaylen is saying it sounds like he was instructed by Ainge and Stevens .. no way he would go to random interviewer and say it was my boss and his boss fault.

Ya with all due to respect to this guys, I just think this is a massive mis-read both of both Jaylens interview and the situation in general.

I would not be surprised at all if the team held a meeting and hashed out a 'company line' on the whole thing, knowing they would all be constantly asked about it.

Stevens is a big fan of Belichik after all.

I doubt it's made up. If it was there'd be a response by now. In any case Jaylen is half right in that the front office and the coach share blame in last year's outcome. But the other half is the players, which include himself and Kyrie. Jaylen did mention "certain guys" who couldn't take a step back. Maybe Scoop B, being a New York centric reporter, glossed over the second point, or certain things got taken out of context, who knows.

And yes Jaylen has said he was misquoted. Misquoted by a dodgy New York centric reporter named Scoop B. What a surprise.

Quote
Brown was quoted in a Dec. 16 Heavy.com story saying Irving was “undeserving” of the blame for last year’s disappointing season, and instead said the “organization and coaching staff” should shoulder most of the blame.

Brown refuted those comments before Wednesday night’s game against the Mavericks, saying his statements were mischaracterized.

“I think it was a misquote, for sure, but to be honest I’m tired of talking about it and tired of being asked about it,” he said. “It definitely, I would say, was a misquote. It didn’t come off the way I said it, the way it was written with a narrative where [the writer] already wrote the story the way he wanted to write the story but it definitely wasn’t intended in that manner. But I’m tired of being asked about it to be honest.”
