Bump. Brad Stevens cost his team the game tonight when he took a red hot Tatum out of the game and didn't re-insert him until 6 minutes left in the freaking fourth quarter. JT was having the game of his life and could have EASILY had 40 if Stevens didn't keep him out for that long. Stevens is going to cost this team a title. He just has no killer instinct as a coach.

Tatum played 40.5/53 minutes last night, including all but 4 seconds of the 3rd quarter.  He needed a rest, and after he got that rest he played the entire 5:45 remaining in regulation plus the entire 5 minutes of overtime. Players aren't going to play the entire 2nd half and stay fresh, especially on a team that plays hard defense

Not to mention that the lead actually increased in the ~6 minutes Tatum sat (from 6 after Wanamaker's 2nd free throw to 7 when Tatum checked back in).  Maybe it would have been larger if Tatum had played straight through, but I would counter with saying that it's equally likely that a tired Tatum would have allowed the Clippers to take an earlier/bigger lead in the 2nd half of the 4th quarter.

Tatum ended the game playing roughly the same amount of minutes as Brown, Walker, Smart etc. Stevens clearly sticks to a script and does not allow the players to exceed his pre-conceived minutes allotment. If a guy is having a career night and did not ask to be subbed out, let him play and see what he can do. Stevens will never allow this. I've seen him do the same thing with Brown, when he's on the verge of having a monstrous night.

And don't even get me started on his rotations. RWIII is clearly the second best center on this roster yet he's back to third string on the depth chart. Why???? Because Stevens is going out of his way to appease Kanter? This is absurd. He needs to play the best players and stop messing with the lineups each and every game. His coaching style makes me want to vomit.

so who is your choice to replace him?  who is available right now that will do a better job than him?

Doesn't matter who replaces him at this point. He needs to go back to Butler. You can't win a title with players who have no killer instinct and you can't win a title with a coach who has no killer instinct. There is no dog in Stevens. He coaches from a script, almost like a robot. I'm tired of him limiting the potential of these players by yanking them when they shouldn't be yanked and by allowing them to throw up shot after shot with no repercussions. He starts giving Javonte Green minutes then takes him out of the rotation completely? What is this guy doing. Yes the 11-3 record is nice but we've had enough of a sample size to know that the record itself is not a true measuring stick of anything. I simply do not like what i'm seeing out of Stevens and i haven't for the past few years.

it doesnt matter?  So how about Tyrone Lue?  It doesnt matter so we can go with him right?  And hes even won a title, so he definitely has a 'dog' in him as well.

im suggesting Lue, because you basically dodged the question by saying it doesnt matter.  Constantly complaining without providing a solution does nobody any good.

After this season, yes bring in Lue. I would be 100 % fine with that. I'm just looking for a change. I can't stomach Stevens' coaching any longer.

wow.

Is Stevens a better coach than Lue? If so tell me how. What does Stevens excel at as a coach?

how about hes had his team in the conference finals 2 of the past three years.

both of those years, that team had NO BUSINESS being there because he had no star player.  His teams have always overachieved except for when hes had to deal with a head case of a star player that didnt want to be there.

how about hes widely regarded as the 2nd best coach in the league, regarded by people who have a lot more basketball knowledge than you.

Yes Tyron Lue has won a ring.  Hes also had Lebron James.  He also cant find a a head coaching job now.  Even the team that has Lebron, lowballed him an offer to be coach because EVERYONE knows hes a toy coach.

If you really think Tyron Lue is a better coach than Brad Stevens I dont know what to tell you.  If all you base it on is that hes won one flippin title, then you probably think Trent Dilfer is a better QB than Dan Marino

I agree.

Brad gets more out of his players.

One example is Evan Turner.
Turner got a big contract from the Blazers after reviving his career in Boston under Brad.

Honestly i don't want to get into a whole debate about Stevens vs. Lue. That probably won't go anywhere. We'll just have to agree to disagree on that. I criticize the players when i feel as though it's justified, i eat crow when i feel as though it's justified, and i criticize the coach when i feel as though it's justified. Basketball is not complicated. I've played this game my whole life. You put the ball in the hole on one end, and on the other you stop the team from putting the ball in the hole. People make it seem like this stuff is rocket science and that we fans have no idea what we're talking about. This game is simple, but i can clearly see this coach is making things way harder than they need to be.

fair enough, though i really dont see how theirs much of an argument between the two. everyone has their own opinion.

most people that love basketball have been playing it their whole lives.  ive been keeping salt water fish my whole life, it doesnt make me a marine biologist.

if you want any input on how much playing and following the game of basketball qualifies you as a talent and coach evaluator, you should give Michael Jordan a call

Yeah, I think I figured out the disconnect here. This pro basketball is simple thing is just so, so wrong.

When I see thread titles like this I always wonder if it is from a Celtics fan. There is not a shred of evidence that BS is a clueless basketball coach and the criticisms I have read here lack any real substance when compared to the facts, which others have contributed here.

I don't care how long somebody has been a fan of a sport, it doesn't make them an expert. Some of the comments on how simple basketball is to coach and what an easy game it is are like saying a Les Paul guitar is a just board and wires or Shakespeare is just paper and ink. The great thing about talking to people about the game that really know the game is their ability to appreciate the little things, the beauty of a pass, the timing of a block or the way a player got an opposition player to do exactly what he wanted. I love what BS does as a coach and brings to the Celtics.
