The Miami Heat have banished James Johnson from their training camp as he reported out of shape based on their metrics.

The Heat said in a statement that Johnson "fell short of our conditioning requirements. Once he fulfills and maintains those requirements, he will rejoin the team."

Pat Riley banished Antoine Walker and James Posey during the 2006 preseason for conditioning issues.

Johnson is entering the third year of a four-year contract that includes a player option for 2020-21.

Erik Spoelstra praised Johnson just one day ago.

"He’s been very serious about his work this summer," Spoelstra said. "You can see it in our conditioning day. He did a great job with that. He’s a unique two-way player in his ability to guard one through five when he's healthy and facilitate and make other players better from a hybrid frontcourt position is unique. He's coming in healthy."

Well, Toine and Posey got paid and won a ring, so he's in good company!

Pat Riley is serious about conditioning. But I wonder what kind of metrics they are using. I wonder if Riley's metrics are truly indicative of performance. I know Johnson has had weight issues in the past and performed much better once he dropped some weight. But I also know he trains mma and may be more "fit" than something like a body fat % will show.

I'm pretty sure Riley used to be all about body fat (maybe also linked with overall weight?) but don't know if he's modernized it at all over the years.

James Johnson never really seems out of shape but then almost nobody shows up out of shape anymore, so it's all relative.

Being in MMA shape and NBA shape are two different things though. Sure, he might be able to fight someone for 15 minutes but can he run up and down the court for 30 minutes every night for 7 months? That takes two completely different types of training and puts you in two completely different types of athletic shape.

But according to Spoelstra, Johnson looked good in workouts and seemed well-conditioned. I'm just wondering if Riley has a hard stance on something like body fat and isn't taking into account actual performance.

I played basketball but was never in the same kind of shape I was when did combat training.

For people wondering about Riley and his obsession with body fat percentage, he's absolutely crazy about it: Shaq started breaking down because Riley wasn't willing to let him play unless he was down to around 13% body fat (couldn't remember what it exactly was, but it was really low compared to his Laker days according to Shaq's autobiography), and Riley wasn't willing to concede that Shaq's body fat acted as a buffer for all the pounding his body took, as well as extra heft to carve up space inside. It's similar stuff with James Johnson, who iirc should be subjected to the body fat limit for forwards (around 8-9% iirc).

I haven’ t hooped in soo long. I’m surprised an MMA couldn’t do anything cardio wise that a pro hoopster could. But who knows if the dude is in MMA shape.

I know many MMA peeps who are out of shape. Connor McGreggor, for one have conditioning and stamina issues. So is Brock Lesnar

Wade also had problems. I remember him saying that he came in with a few extra pounds and claiming that he is bulking. They flat out told him that he is getting fat and urged him to get back into shape
