Ainge isn't setting our contention to timeline back further, and next season will be our first real shot at a championship into the rebuild.  If anything, he will trade Brown in a win-now move for a more experienced vet.

This seems like a classic case of grass-is-greener/bird-in-the-hand.

What do you get with Ayton? He is a good prospect, but there are several reasons I wouldn't do this.

1. I don't trust Ayton's jumpshot. His right shoulder extends too far forward on his follow-through. He is over-extending himself to shoot from 3, and because of that I don't think he can be consistent without changes (although his form could change).

2. Defense matters. He is an average college defender. I don't know if he can anchor an NBA defense.

3. Two-way wings win championships, for the most part. Not point guards. Not centers.

With the way the current NBA is, the most valuable type of player is a two-way wing. They can play big and take advantage of the opposing team's bigs. They can post up smalls and score. They can defend big or small in stints.

Why do Celtic fans always want to punt down the field for the next prospect? We have two top 10 under-23 players right now.

I agree with most of this, but what did you think of Brown's jumpshot at Cal?  My recollection is that it looked worse than Ayton's does now.  Certainly it wasn't effective.

That’s tough because physiologically they are different bodies. Many of browns shots at cal were contested. Also, I liked the basic form on his jumpshot. The only concern that I’ve had is that he shoots on the way down sometimes, which can be corrected through work (and arguably already has been).

Ayton is both flat and overextended in his follow-through. It’s harder, in my opinion for any big man to shot, because of their size, which is why the best shooters tend to be guards and wings and guys like dirk are amazing.

It’s my opinion, but it doesn’t make me right. It’s just my sense of their abilities.

I'm not super high on Brown. I like him, but imo he relies a bit too much on his athleticism

When you have it, you flaunt it.  Should he jump less and let guys block his shot or move slower so other guys are not winded and can keep up with him?
His athleticism is off the charts but his basketball skills are a work in progress.

- Court vision is abysmal (3rd from last in assist to turnover ratio among guards with 10+ mins per game*).
- Ball handling is loose.
- Loves to run the floor/at his best when playing at fast pace. Not sure whether he 'll be able to do that consistently in the playoffs (when it matters the most).
- Shaky shooter. I know 3P% has improved a lot since last season, but at the same time FT% has dropped to .586 (.685 last season).

Don't get me wrong, I like Brown. It's just that I probably like him a bit less than most of you guys do.

(Link doesn't work cause the URL is too long. Copy paste the whole thing and it will work.)

I think what we can say is that in his second year, he is a plus 3-point shooter and a versatile, nearly elite defender. His other skills are still developing, and we don’t know what the ceiling is yet. At his best,  brown does things like single-handedly put the Celtics in a position to win against Golden State. At his worst, his intensity seems to work against him and he frustrates himself. My expectation is that he will tighten his handle and learn to channel all that intensity – in which case I think he’s a pretty solid all star in a couple of years. But I can understand why opinions may differ. I think even a fairly parish case for him has him as a solid rotational player on a team that goes deep in the playoffs.

A lot of people have noted that Jaylen had to be a primary decision and play-maker at Cal, which exposed probably the weakest part of his game in his ball-handling/passing and isolation offense.

Ainge was smart to evaluate his shot outside of those game settings (similar to Tatum).  In the NBA, you rarely have to play they way one did in college.

Honestly, I'd probably just rather keep Brown. I think Ayton is gonna be a beats in this league, but Elite level wings (like brown has the chance to be) are the most valuable commodity in the NBA. Right now Brown is already a high level 3 and D player, and I've seen enough from him on offense to believe that he could eventually be an elite scorer who puts the ball in the hoop at all three levels. He's shown a much improved mid range game shooting 46.4% from 16ft-3pt, and 50% from 10ft-16ft. He's always had a decent post game. His handles need tightening but I think given the improvements he's already taken he'll get there. Again, no slight to Ayton but I'll take the chance with Brown.

I really like Brown too.  He needs to make serious improvements with his handles and his playmaking ability but besides that he is already a good starter on a good team.  I think he will make those improvements because of his work ethic.  I wish that we had Brown and Ayton.  It’s possible but very unlikely.
