So after paying it the max, can we still do a multi for Baynes next year? Is what this thread come down to...

Salt?

We could have chosen to sign Baynes to a two-year deal, but Ainge is trying to limit obligations ahead of the near-certain luxury tax that will occur in 2018-2019.  If that's what you're asking.

I think the question is, can we re-sign Baynes next summer even if over the cap.

And I think the answer is yes, but only to 120% of his 2017 salary, and for up to four years.

(Setting aside luxury tax issues, this is just in the context of the cap).

We could also use the taxpayer MLE to resign him, which would likely be a shade higher than 120% of his current salary.

Just so I understand things though - we'd prefer the non-Bird option right? Because it would preserve the MLE for someone else?

Yes, but practically speaking if we're that far into the tax that we're using the taxpayer MLE to sign a player, we're probably not also signing Baynes to the non-Bird.

Also bear in mind that we're likely to have no more than 5 expiring/non-guaranteed contracts heading into next season (IT, Smart, Baynes, and two of Jackson, Nader, and Theis), with up to 3 1st round picks, and certainly the intention to keep at least one of IT and Smart.  In terms of roster management, I think it's unlikely we'd have both a mid-level and Baynes even if the luxury tax were not a factor at all.
