If the Celtics strike out in free agency, however, they could renegotiate-and-extend his deal this summer.  I think there's a decent chance they go that route if Hayward et al. dont choose Boston.

Would you please explain what you mean by re-negotiate?

It's when you use cap space to extend a players contract. If a player signed a 4 year deal, they can renegotiate it after the 3rd year. Strictly different to an extension. It's what Westbrook and Harden did last summer.
We could renegotiate IT to the 0-6year max this summer, $25.5m I believe, giving him a massive boost in salary next year to offset the lower salary in subsequent years. It makes more financial sense for him than waiting to get the max next year imo, it would mean he'd be eligible for the 10 year max when he next became a free agent.

There is 0% chance Isaiah extends his current deal.

Well if its up to IT4 he will extend it :)

What on earth are you talking about?

IT would stand to lose a lot of money by agreeing to an early extension. The only way IT could make more money by signing this summer as opposed to waiting until he becomes a free agent is if the Celtics give him a raise for next year too, which requires cap space to do so. But that would mean no outside free agents could be signed, which doesn't benefit the team.

I don't think IT4 will wait until next off season to sign a larger extension

If the offer is there this offseason... he will take it

The extension can only be 120% of the annual value of the last year of his current deal.

On the open market IT will get annual value around 3-4 times what he's making now.

which teams can you see paying him max max?

When was the last time you knew of a guy who finished top 3 in the NBA in scoring at 29 PPG and didn't get a max contract?

He'll get max, guaranteed.  And he deserves it.

He may be eligible...but IT4 wont be getting a 10 year max extension at 31-32 .... Sadly once IT4 loses his quickness it wont be easy to play at a high level... Still could provide umpact off the bench

I think the C's should keep IT. I think he cant be "THE" guy but I do think he can be part of the solution. I wonder if DA would risk letting him test FA next summer and try to find out what he is truly worth. I think he's worth more to the Cs than he is anyone else.

No player can lead a nobody team to a championship, but Isaiah has led one of the youngest teams in the league to a #1 seed and to the ECF three years into a rebuild.

That is on top of the fact that he's averaging 29 and 6, and that he leads the NBA in 4th quarter scoring (something every team desires).

In a league where Timofey Mosgov and Tristan Thompson are making $17m a year, you can bet your butt that Isaiah is a max contract guy.

but Cavs are willing to have 120 million payroll......they have four guys with huge salarys .....what if Lebron had to make do without Love and Thompson massive contracts ......would he still be unbeatable .

in my mind , Cavs are buying a champiobships by out spending everbody else.  We see how they struggle to win withou Thompson or love available.  Lebron works like a dog to win gmaes if they are missing.

Boston is going to have to spend more  money , no matter who it is to beat Cavs ,   Cavs are willing to max four players it seems .    Two max players is not going to beat four in a series .

If stars win series playoffs ,  then don't we need to get even with Cavs in terms of payroll.

are Cavs really so great , if they have to stay under cap like the Celtics .

Lakers will spend to win , ......its still about money and money buys stars .

to me it comes down to the owners ...how bad do they wantt to beat the Cavs.

As much as I love IT, I'm still skeptical of him getting a full max.  He'll be 29 in the first year of his new contract and he's still only 5'9" which will always be an issue offensively and defensively.  I wonder if we could sign him to a more reasonable deal, something like 4/100.

Right.  The salary cap is projected to be $101 million for next season, and $103 million the following season.  The Celtics could offer IT a 5-year contract this summer, starting at the 0-6 max of $25.25 million.  Alternatively, IT could play out his contract and sign with another team for the 7-9 max in 2018 (5% raises), or the 7-9 max with the Celtics in 2018 (8% raises).  Here's how the choices play out:

1) IT plays out his contract, signs a max elsewhere next summer -- $132.9 million new contract over four years, $139.1 million over 5-year period.

2) IT plays out his contract, signs a max with Celtics -- $138.4 million over four years of new contract, $144.6 million over 5-year period.

3) IT renegotiated his contract this summer, signing a 5-year max at the 0-6 experience level -- $121.2 million over the four years of free agency he foregoes, and $146.5 million over the 5-year period.

In other words, we see that if IT signed a max this summer, he would get paid more than he would waiting a year and signing a max at a higher per year salary.  At the same time, the Celtics could save over $17 million during the 4-year max period, or about $4 million per year, giving them a little more wiggle room with the luxury tax.  It's even possible that there's negotiating room, such that IT could be paid a little bit under the 0-6 max, or given slightly smaller raises, so that he winds up with the same total 5-year salary in situations 1 or 2.  I don't think that happens myself -- the NBA standard is that you give All-NBA players in their 20s the most you can give them, but again, it at least creates a bargaining position.

impossible to project out cap space, but plenty of teams with it will pay him huge money.

keep in mind, last season it cost 18 mil a year to get Evan turner to come off the bench. Someone out there is gonna be willing to pay 30 mil to have IT be their #1 option.

Portland regrets that move every day.

And I don't think IT4 will get 30 million a year offers around the league

They certainly will.
Teams like Charlotte would love to replace Kemba with IT or have them play together perhaps.
The Pelicans would give him a max contract to add to Davis and Cousins. That would be an awesome team with some good defenders and good shooters surrounding them.

The Knicks, the Nets, the 76ers, the Bulls. San antonio?

He'll get the absolute max too.

He is second team All NBA and #2 scorer in the league. I'm actually very shocked you don't think he'll get max money. He will sell tickets and carries a large general NBA fan following because of his size. Chinese love him too.

He is 100% getting the max.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I think a good question to ask is what teams will be able to sign a max free agent when IT becomes a FA and will they prioritize a 5-9 PG over other available FA?
