Just them saving luxury tax dollars.  Birdman is out for the year with an ACL.  Let's them sign a free agent PG now or after the deadline.

If anyone knows this, it will be you.

Why was Charlotte interested in this deal?

They got paid $300k more than they'll owe Birdman.  Also, there's a chance Birdman gets claimed on waivers by a team trying to get to the salary floor so that they'll earn even more money from the deal.

This is similar to what we did with OKC regarding Perry Jones II and Miami's Zoran Dragic, isn't it? Only that was during the summer.

In both of those cases we got a future unprotected 2nd.

This is more like when we sent cash and an injured Marcus Daniels to Sacramento for a top-55 protected 2nd round pick.

The Cleveland Cavaliers traded Chris “Birdman” Andersen to the Charlotte Hornets, the team announced on Monday.

In exchange, Cleveland received a protected second-round draft pick.

Andersen suffered a non-contact injury during a game on Dec. 16. He underwent season-ending surgery for an ACL tear.

This makes no sense.  Charlotte gives up a second round pick for a player that is out for the season?  Why would Charlotte do this?

The pick won't convey. It's top-55 protected.

Charlotte gets cash to cover Birdman's salary, plus another $300k or so for their trouble.

OK, now it makes sense.  I guess Charlotte has a roster spot they can sort of rent out for $300,000 so Cleveland can sign another player who might actually be able to play.  Cleve saves money on Luxury Tax with this so why not.

Yes, I remember. That was because we were their only opportunity to save many bucks and so they included a sweetener in the deal, if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks and TP  :)

I wonder if Cavs are looking for Love replacement?

"The Cavs did not announce the results of the MRI, nor would they share with whom Love would consult Tuesday. Obviously, the need for more tests and more sets of eyes suggests whatever the Cavs’ doctor saw Sunday in Love’s knee wasn’t optimal. Sources said Love likely suffered the injury — whatever it is — at some point during the Cavs’ recent four-game swing. It’s unclear when he hurt the knee or when team officials learned of the injury, but Love played in Thursday’s loss to Oklahoma City. – via Cleveland Plain Dealer"

a Kevin Love injury could add some serious intrigue down the stretch here.

He is really important to them in the regular season as he takes a lot of the load off of Kyrie and Lebron.

Is there any way that Celtics could get MKG?

I think there's some potential there.

Would love MKG.

Unfortunately, I don't think anyone here would be pleased with his shooting. I wonder what it would take too. Batum hasn't been as consistent as last year.

I kind of am against these trades of injured and retired players. I think the new CBA should adjust this. Mo Williams has been signed multiple times and he is not even playing. Anderson will never play for this team. It feels like a bit of a cheap loophole (especially considering the Celtics were once forced to play a player that had passed away).

What?  How did they play a dead player?  All I can think of is Weekend at Bernies.

David Stern is a jerk for insisting to keep the payroll of Reggie Lewis which ate Celtic's salary cap.

It was the Board of Governors (I.e., the other owners).

I blame the lawyers who reviewed the CBA, for not anticipating that as a potential issue. Without a rule, the owners voted to give the Celtics minimal cap relief. I don't think it was defensible (why treat Reggie differently than a permenantly disabled player), but that's the pettiness of owners.
