How can Super Teams continue to build while others "can't afford stars"?

In this case, why would the Celtics ever trade one of their Brooklyn picks? If they hit on one or both, they are essentially afforded the ability to pay for them for the rest of their career, regardless of what they do with the rest of their team. I'm obviously using a little hyperbole there, but still.....

Because having Kevin Garnett is unconditionally better than the right to draft Jeff Green, figuratively speaking. And ultimately, if someone doesn't want to stay, you can't force them.

I even think that the league has changed since KG's Celtics, though. Right now you have two potential champions: GSW and CLE. The Celtics have to beat both of those teams to win a ring. CLE is benefitting greatly by the fact that Lebron is from Akron. GSW is benefitting b/c of their unbelievable drafting (GM luck or talent- either way, they got the players they needed).

We can say eff it, there's no way we can win and pull out a Philly strategy. I prefer to try to contend while building for the future. In this regard, I think Danny is executing pretty well (besides his actual drafting, which has been pretty average).

All I am saying is that a great pick doesn't guarantee you a great player. Likewise, if a player wants to leave, he will leave (whether you drafted them or not) -- and if he wants to sign with you, he will (example: LeBron, and, well LeBron).

In a trade, you know what you're getting.

I keep thinking about how this will apply to Philly in a couple years. They'll have a so many players looking for max/big deals within a couple of years that they can't afford to sign them all.

Embiid, Noel, Okafor, Saric, Simmons and the picks they get this year - you're looking at top picks wanting top dollar. Due to logjams at the same positions, you're looking at guys either walking or being traded for pennies on the dollar.

They have managed that problem very effectively to date. Of course, they do it by demoralizing and mis-using their players to the point that they are no longer worth max contracts, but still. Problem solved.

Utter nonsense.  Does Embiid look demoralized?  He's talking about making the playoffs even though they are 8 games out.  Noel is their 1st rookie coming into free agency and he has never deserved a MAX contract.  Embiid still has 1 year on his rookie contract but I'd guess they'll offer him a MAX extension this offseason.  Okafor is a 2nd year player and Simmons, Saric and Luwawu are all rookies.  So who are these "players" that they demoralized and misused ought of MAX contacts? 

The reason the Sixers have the best cap space in the league is that Hinkie didn't foolishly tie it up paying veterans while they were tanking.  Instead he used their cap space in salary dump deals to acquire additional 1st round picks and kept the team young.  1st round rookie deals are cheap and he signed 2nd round picks/undrafted players to cheap 4 year deals with unguaranteed money each year.  While Colangelo acquired a few vets this season, 10 of their players are on their rookie contracts.  Only 3 of their players (Noel, Embiid and Covington) have been on their roster for more than 2 years.

Noel wasn't going to get a 4yr/100M deal this offseason.   Most teams, after they sign their own free agents, aren't going to have cap space for MAX deals like they did last year.  Noel would probably have been in the 4yr/64-80M range.  After his poor handling of the 3 center situation, he probably will be at the low range of that at best.
