I'm going to be disappointed by anything less than a series win and a tough out in either the ECSF or ECF.  But Horford has had some major injuries, losing him would knock us back and could make a 2nd big man injury devastating.

That said the obvious silver lining to a lousy season would be the development of Brown, Rozier and perhaps another rookie/2nd year guy or two.

Higher pick is the only one I can think of in all honesty and that would help us marginally.

Yeah but remember we'd have to get a higher pick than Brooklyn to keep it, and their pick would probably be good enough that it could render their 2018 pick less valuable.  This is an absolutely untankable year under any realistic scenario.

There are a couple of posters forgetting this point, so TP for bringing it up. I would love to see BKN get a pick in the high 20s - for obvious reasons  ;D

I suppose, but it would take a very twisted lens to see it that way.

I suppose if we suck this year it makes extension decisions on guys like Thomas Bradley Smart and Olynyk easier. We can move a couple of those guys no sweat and hand the team over to Brown Crowder Rozier Horford Brooklyn '17 etc.

This would be good news in that it would be bad news but bad news received before it was too late.
The alternative being that the team continues to overachieve for a few years reaching ECFS then you overpay Bradley and Thomas and Klynyk and the wheels fall off in year 3.

That's what I was thinking too.

Super precarious position overall really

technically we could tank because we could then add our lotto odds with Brooklyns, but realistically tanking doesnt make any sense.

Knowing the true value of Smart, KO, Rozier and other recent picks. IT, AB, Horford, Crowder and Amir do what they do consistently enough to know you want them. Smart's shooting and ball handling, KO's all round game and the teams depth will be the areas that are tested most and could be crucial to improvement or stagnation. A 7th seed first round exit would be a disaster, other than injury to key players, I believe it would be the shortcomings in players like Smart or KO that would cost the team rather than Bradley, IT or others mentioned.

Curious to know if anyone can see any potential silver linings to a 7th seed 1st round exit or worse (given that would be the floor for most people's expectations).

Subtract Sully, add Hortford = 4 places lower in the standings and another 1st round exit? Somebody messed up.
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

We should win 55+ and threaten for the ECF.  But even if we miss the playoffs, as long as Brooklyn keeps stinking our future is bright.

If we miss the playoffs, theoretically, BKN has a better chance to improve due to the pick swap (getting their own lottery pick in return).  Then BKN '18 might not look as bright.

This is the point that dictates there is no benefit for us to have a bad season.  Absolutely none that I can think of.  I guess if we are really bad, we get to keep our second round pick that the Nets would otherwise get (protected 31-45).
