I don't like Chriss from what I've seen of him in videos.
Poor fundamentals. Terrible defensive rebounder. Lacks polish on his finishing inside. Seems to get by mostly on athleticism.
Would much rather select Poeltl or Davis if we're taking big men.
Yes. The track record for the "raw athletic freak without refined skills or feel for the game" may be worse than the record for the "skilled Euro big who needs toughness," and yet we've spent about 10,000 more posts worrying about the risks associated with the latter type of player.
Boris nails it. But I'm still a sucker for both.
I respect the fear of bust potential on Chriss. But I would say:
1) a quick, pretty clean, very repeatable shooting stroke is a refined skill;
2) Feel for the game gets thrown around a lot, and is tricky to measure. I've seen some plays where Chriss' position and timing looks terrific. Others less so. But Chriss is young, and hasn't played much hoop yet (he was a football player, I believe). Is he coachable? Can he learn?
