jimmy butler struggled his first few years offensively. he turned out pretty well. IMO they are similar players, athletic, intelligent, and driven.

doesn't mean smart will drastically improve. just means he has a decent shot to do so , which would be awesome.

Calling Smart an intelligent player is a bit exaggerated I think.  He is a great athlete and a great defender but he has been an awful offensive player for most of two seasons.  He has shown flashes, but there has been no consistency to his game.  He had a great game off the bench for the Celtics.  Let's just leave it at that.  One playoff series, where he has still be inconsistent is not going to make this kid go from being a future role player to being a future superstar.

He had a great game, but to shut people up he needs to do it consistently in all reality.  Good game 1 and 4, not so good game 2 & 3.

I think he rose to the occasion last night and almost got in a duel with Milsap scoring late in the game.

If Marcus Smart played like that consistently he'd be one of the twenty best players in NBA history.  So saying he needs to be a hall of fame type player to shut people up, makes me think some people have unrealistic expectations.
this.

He needs to produce on both ends consistently and some people have unrealistic expectations such that no matter what he does, it'll never be good enough.

he won't be Paul Pierce and there were people here who'd go off on Pierce at any opportunity (granted, that's a smaller number of people who went off on Ray, Rondo, Antoine, etc....) but even the great and almighty KG had some posters constantly harping on his weak points (or games when he underperformed).

Has he shown anything to tell us that he is going to be good outside shooter for his career?  For me, his issue is not so much his shooting ability, but it is his decision making.  His decision making is putrid most of the time.  When he makes good decisions, he tends to play well, but he takes a lot of bad shots.  This helps contribute to his poor shooting percentages.  He has the skills and the athleticism to be a very good player in this league.  I am not sure he has the brain to do it.  Even with a great game 4, we still have to remember game 2.  The 1-11 shooting nights feel like they come a lot more with Smart than the good or average nights.

Some of you act like Smart is taking a lot of bad shots. He is pretty much doing everything right, his shots just arn't going in most nights. If he just stops shooting then we play 4 on 5 on O (or 3 on 5 or 2 on 5 depending who else is in there.)

Well, he does take some bad shots. A contested 3 pointer for Marcus has like a 20% chance of going in, and he takes entirely too many of them. He even takes step-back 3's at times, which is just not his game. I think Stevens has been giving him the green light to keep shooting, similar to how Sully was shooting all those threes last season.
