Wyc's take update:

Wyc on Felger and Mazz made a couple statements about sponsors on jerseys. He seemed expectedly luke warm on the idea but said, "I'd like to find a logo that's green and white," and, "We'll see what kind of partners would be appropriate for a jersey like the Celtics."

I have some faith in the Celtics front office to make this inevitability as palatable as possible. Due to the recent comments, it seems like Sprite might be the ideal choice.

Can individual teams choose to not put advertising on their jerseys, or is this a league mandate?  I'd hope the Celtics considered themselves above this.  Money is hard to pass up, though.

If this indeed is inevitable I hope it's not to obtrusive to the overall uniform design.  I'll be disappointed if the NBA adopts the European soccer model of highly prominent logos dominating the uniform design.  A small bar on the lower back is about the extent of what I'd be okay with.

I believe it'll be league wide because the money will be split with the players and other teams.

That's interesting.  I wonder how that will work.  If the money is pooled, is the league negotiating all 30 advertising deals?  Or do the teams still get to negotiate their own deals?

If the league is negotiating, who decides which team is sponsored by which company?  If the individual teams can negotiate their own deals, what if some teams can't find reasonable terms, relative to the other teams?

Looks like it is all but official, and there will soon be ad patches on NBA jerseys. I don't love the idea but I also don't feel strongly opposed to it. However, this thread is not intended as a forum to argue the pros (*crickets*...puts more money into owners' pockets??) and cons (It's destroying the purity of my precious professional sports league!!!).

With that said, what companies/logos would you like to see on different NBA jerseys? Remember this is inevitable so answering, "NO ADS," and presenting your case on why you don't want this to happen isn't the point of this thread. Resistance is futile and, like Kent Brockman, we should welcome our new insect overlords.

To start, I think Guinness would be a good sponsor for the Celtics. A black and gold patch with the Guinness harp would be unobtrusive and consistent with the Irish theme. I also wouldn't mind Sprite because of the color and relationship with basketball (history of bball ad campaigns), and Lucky Charms would be silly but fun.

I immediately thought of Guinness too. But, would that fly with the NBA? Aren't they already pimping Bacardi as the official drink?

Aer Lingus seems another obvious choice.

Bushmills or Jameson would be appropriate.
Posted first, reading second.  I put in caffreys but either of those fine sipping whiskys would be great.  Ness owned by non Irish!!!

How about the Celtics pay to advertise their own banners on the jersey? Or a little Scalabrine Head?

Basketball is very lucky to not have had ads up to this point. Jerseys look much better without them. As a football fan (soccer) as well I can tell you ads often stick out like a sore thumb. They can also remind you of a particularly bad period for your team... Thanks Wonga...

Guineas would be a good one, also TD bank. Preferably something green so it fits in with the other writing on the jersey

TD bank would fit perfectly with TD Garden
I could very well see the Hawks... starting Taurean Prince at the 3, who is already better than Crowder, imo.

you vs. the guy she tells you not to worry about

Looks like this is becoming official:

Also, there's some relief for those who don't want to be walking advertisements: https://twitter.com/darrenrovell/status/720996130545410050

TD wouldn't be a bad choice considering the colors and existing association with the team.

I hear the logo of the Boston Celtics has some nice green and white hues. In all seriousness, is it a mandatory measure now that you put a corporate sponsor on the jersey?

Guinness beer for the Celtics.
You are no longer black, or brown, or yellow, or red! You are now GREEN, you are light GREEN, or dark GREEN!

Yes, beginning with the 2017-2018 season, it appears that will be the case. Not clear if teams would be allowed to "opt out" of this but highly doubtful because the plan seems to be to have 50% of the dough go to revenue sharing.
