His routine is terrible.  He is a good shooter and would hit his free throws at a much better rate without his dumb routine.
i really am curious how one would prove this.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
His statline tonight was also ridiculous (in a good way).

For some reason, Sully appears to be one of those players that fans are never satisfied with. He was picked #21 and is, bare minimum, a legitimate starter on the 3rd best team in an improved Eastern Conference. He turned 24 just over a week ago.

I understand the frustration with Sully because it's easy to convince yourself that he could be so much better if he lost weight. Without getting into why he hasn't lost weight - it's so difficult to consistently gain weight during the regular season, I'm beginning to think he has a genetic condition or something - my advice is to appreciate Sullinger for what he is: a very productive two-way player that we landed at the cost of a late 1st rounder. Start doing that, and you'll likely find it much more enjoyable to watch Sully play.

Well I love Sully and have defended him to the death here more than anyone- I mean honestly I've stuck up for him literally more than any poster on this board.

I just think his free throw routine isn't smooth enough and the palming of the ball and holding it out in front of him means he's getting different levels of momentum when he winds up.

I'd like him to try a different routine or just shoot it normally and see how he goes because he's got a really nice stroke/form with in game jumpshots.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

IMO The move clears the extra skin of his arm, from his arm pit. So when he completes his releases the skin isn't sticking to his body.

That routine most likely is a habit, and positive trigger, and a benefit to his FT shooting.

It reminds me of someone at a beer pong table.

It's kind of a silly ritual. But he's a solid FT shooter.

Hurts my back to see him set up and hold the ball out......not good form for lower back.

I watch games online so I see road games with the other team announcers. bust quote- "for a guy that doesn't shoot the ft so well maybe he should drop the globe trotter routine"

Sometimes guys delay at the line to take a breather, I think this could be the case here.

He's got a serious regression this season shooting at 10 per cent points less than last season (63.7 instead of 74.4%)

Still, his career average is good (73%) and he made it with his ridiculous FT routine

Whatever works is a time honoured C's motto when it comes to FTs. Let it be.

Well, Jeff Hornacek had a weird routine (I think he originally wanted to say "hi" to his kids) and shot 87.7% career.

At least where I come from, coaches encourage young players to find a routine, and to stick to it every time they shoot a ft.
The point is not *what* you do, the point is that you *do* have a routine.
The idea is simple: shooting ft's is something you want to automate (get into 'muscle memory') as much is possible. Clutch time or fatigue shouldn't matter, your ft should come off the same, every time.
So the little routine is intended to give you a little breather, time to focus, and turn the 'autopilot' on.
